Pros

A lot of high-level work. Owner is excellent at being ahead of the "industry curve" and keeping work coming in the door. The staff are generally a very good and very competent group.

Cons

The owner is the most distasteful individual I have ever met. He is often crude, swears at employees, and has used both sexist and antisemitic remarks in incredibly inappropriate moments. There is no structure within the company, as a result, for junior engineers there is no traditional "career path". The owners favorite form of discipline is public humiliation-you best have thick skin to work here--no one is immune from it. There is no definable, and often none whatsoever, compensation for extraordinary time in the field. Direction in the oil and gas operations comes only from the owner whose direction is usually poorly articulated. The office environment is more like a veterinarians office with up to 8 dogs in the office belonging to various employees (very, very, very annoying). There is an abundance of nepotism within the company. The owners presence in the office creates an undeniable tension and uneasiness. Owner likes to have company functions after work; unfortunately he becomes even more distasteful under the influence.

Pros

Good benefits, good people, more stable than typical oilfield. They try very hard to take care of their employees.

Cons

It's still the oil patch, so ups and downs are to be expected.

Pros

- Highly dynamic work environment, projects are usually short and fast-paced - Compensation is great, you are paid for both your experience and the quality of your work

Cons

- Work load is non-uniform, some weeks you barely have anything to do, some weeks you work 80 hours - You must be able to work independently and with vague goals to produce useful work product.
