Pros

Good benefits, holiday pay, and they offer more than most human service positions (except for working for county). You go to work every day knowing you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on a formidable mind that is in a state of crisis or transition. It is meaningful work.

Cons

During my time there, I was dissuaded and at some times reprimanded for going above and beyond the call of duty for the adolescents we were serving. The washing machine and/or dryer was broken for much of my employment and with 12 residents, that is NOT ok. There was a point system for the kids and they would be on restrictions most of the time because so many of the staff did not understand how to differentiate normal teen behavior (such as an eyeroll) from truly inappropriate behavior (throwing a chair). There are too many concerns to name here, but I will say that this location needs an overhaul with staff and local management. Working with teens in the human services field requires a certain amount of compassion and stability that VonWald is not offering at this time. The only staff that had even a hint of this were the employees that had worked there for a multitude of years. When I put in my notice, I asked to volunteer (which the director of the residences had suggested because of my ability to connect with the residents). The local manager did not agree.
