Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. I appreciate that you note the significant opportunities we provide our employees with regards to project typologies and responsibilities. Indeed, our diverse portfolio has supported many employees' path to licensure. And we just recently promoted 6 of our team members to Senior Associate or Associate. While it's hard to address your specific concerns here's what I would say: Our dynamic culture of teamwork, transparency and accountability isn't for everyone. It's true that our leaders expect the best from team members, and sometimes those expectations can be quite demanding, challenging. And we are successful as a firm and as a group of people due in no small measure to this spirited and strong leadership. Many architects/designers come to 1100 to advance in their careers and many have found that we provide the platform from which they can thrive. Receiving timely constructive feedback is critical to this growth – and I am disappointed that you have not received more. Your feedback actually supports my initiative that we augment annual performance evaluations with more touch-base conversations, perhaps scheduled at the midpoint and end of an employee’s project(s). I am also working with project leaders on ways to provide better guidance, direction, and coaching. But I would also recommend that you ask for feedback too – my experience shows that when you make yourself open to feedback, you will receive more feedback and also - more recognition. Work/Life balance is a common topic among the Partners and Principals. Aside from our focus on hiring talented team member as we grow, we are always aware when there is a team or employee putting in extra hours – so we routinely award comp time after intense charrettes and long stretches to meet deadlines. We also take hours worked into consideration when we award end of year bonuses. I wonder if you were not with us long enough to receive any comp time or an end of year bonus. I would like to understand better what you mean by “hr shares personal information”. As the person in charge for “all things HR” at 1100, this comment truly surprised me. Without details, I can only clarify that our confidential employee information is just that - confidential. If you remain a current employee, I would like to help you reach your goals and potential at 1100. Please feel free to connect with me, I would be very happy to help. Thanks again, Betty Gonzalez (Business Director)

Pros

1100 Architect has been a welcoming office to work on the Operations Team as well as the architects in the design studio. There are opportunities for career growth and lots to learn!

Cons

The admin assistant role is an in office 5 days a week role. But the majority of the office has a hybrid schedule of 3 days in the office and remote Monday and Friday which is nice.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re so glad to hear that you’ve found the office welcoming and that you’ve enjoyed working with both the Operations Team and the design studio. We continually look for ways to improve the workplace and have since introduced one remote workday per week for the Operations Team when schedules allow. We appreciate your thoughtful feedback as we continue working to keep the office welcoming for everyone.

Pros

Lots of different project types. If you know how to butter up the founding principal, you're good here, even if your work is sloppy. The German office does interesting work, but the German office is not the NY office. There are many professional resource groups but they are in name only. There is almost no budget to support these groups.

Cons

Despite the company being over 40 years old - The work is dated and appears to be stuck in the 1980s. Most of the work is public agency contracts and institutional maintenance but even for those this company is being out-competed. The office looks cheap as it is mostly painted gyp and lacking in architectural detailing. The conference room chairs are tatty and stained. The conference table looks like a student project. Under one of the Founders, project deliverables are sloppy and riddled with errors because the PMs are not PM-ing and the team is stepping over each other and/or individuals are not reliable. The cover image of the firms book sums up the issues. The project is shrouded in darkness which seems like a strange way to promote the company as a design firm.

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective and recognizing the diversity of project types in our work. While we respect that former employees have varying experiences, several of the statements in this review do not accurately reflect our firm or our current workplace. Our work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including several received as recently as 2025. Our projects span residential, workplace, cultural, and institutional sectors, and we remain actively engaged in design-driven work across all of these areas. Additionally, the description of our office environment refers to a space that we no longer occupy. We recently relocated to a new studio designed to support collaboration and contemporary architectural practice. The suggestion that our current workplace reflects the conditions described in this review is inaccurate. The review also raises concerns about leadership and qualifications. Like many architecture practices of our size, our leadership team includes individuals with both design and business expertise to support the operational and strategic needs of the practice. The individual referenced as “untrained” holds a business degree and has spent more than twenty five years in senior management roles, more than half of them prior to joining 1100. Finally, our culture of teamwork, focus, and accountability is not for everyone. Our leaders expect high levels of professionalism, collaboration, and performance from every member of the team. At times those expectations can be demanding, challenging, and even difficult. However, the firm’s longevity and continued success are due in no small measure to the standards we hold ourselves to and the many talented professionals who have built their careers here. We wish the reviewer the best in their future endeavors.
