Pros

You get a brand new Apple laptop! Because nothing says "I care about you" like shiny tech to distract you from the chaos. They even send you nice certificates to hang above your bed, so you can wake up every morning feeling like a participant in a mediocre talent show.

Cons

Tech debt is so high it could fund a small country. Good luck getting anything done at a sensible pace. Management is like a game of musical chairs—everyone's clueless, and just when you think you’re sitting down, the music stops and they pivot to something entirely new. It’s a miracle if anything gets done. They love to throw around buzzwords like "OKRs" and "outcomes," but at the end of the day, decisions are based on the almighty dollar. The company mission? More like a bedtime story. So, the CEO is selling us a bunch of speeches about caring for students and teachers—how charming! But if you look at his track record, it's like a graveyard of companies that either don’t exist anymore or are barely hanging on by a thread, with a skeleton crew to boot. You know, it’s funny how employees always seem to forget that the execs and board are really just counting beans, not caring if the company survives long enough to actually help anyone. But hey, as long as the numbers give us a good story to sell, right?

Pros

Flexible work hours and decent work/life balance.

Cons

Management make decisions with little to no input from their staff and then wonder why morale is low and teams are underperforming. Repetitively over the years, we see management say one thing and then do the opposite shortly after. We are seeing the lack of trust impacting the business widely. The company has internal values which espouse positivity, camaraderie, and focus on the product but these seem to be more for lip service than actually being lived out.

Thanks for sharing your review. Appreciate your call out that working at EP is flexible and gives you a positive work / life balance. At EP we are always looking for better ways to involve teams in the decisions that affect them and our customers. We have recently started to move towards more cross functional company planning - this is in early stages but we are confident that over time, this will have a positive impact on ensuring that more people are involved in company planning. We are also looking at our values at the moment - there are definitely opportunities for these to be more visible and aligned with the ways that we work now as EP has evolved. Appreciate you sharing where you are at and what is on your mind - if you are still at EP and feel able to, it would be great if you could share your thoughts directly with someone internally so we can better understand what’s going on for you and respond. Thanks again, EP P&C team

Pros

Work/life balance, flexible hours depending on role, there are still some very brilliant and beautiful people working on the ground level, who truly believe in improving education. The company used to have many more.

Cons

The leadership at EP does not adhere to any of the values it pretends to live by. Values like "Open and Straightforward" and "Care and Support" mean nothing when the CEO Alex Burke personally took to bullying an LGBT+ member for offering positive rainbow suggestions—the same afternoon EP received a Rainbow Tick certification. Many departments have faced large redundancies after being told it is "business as usual" the week before. Employees have had to involve lawyers and unions in order to secure bonuses and redundancy payments. Those that do not, open themselves up to individual daily messages from the CEO himself. It is a terrible shame to see a business with such potential being poisoned by select leadership members. I worry about the future of the company and its integrity as an educator.

I must say I’m pretty taken back and disappointed with this review. In my nine years as a CEO (including two years at Education Perfect) I have not ever had anyone call me out on my own personal values or portray me as a bully. I’m a people leader and I will always remain professional and respectful to all. At the beginning of 2021 we kicked off a review to reimagine the way the firm produces learning resources. Development of world-class resources continues to be a top priority for Education Perfect, but a new approach is required in line with the firm’s global growth ambitions. Education Perfect trialed a new delivery model over the last 5 months, as well as looked at other successful EdTech companies. Based on the findings, a new team structure was proposed to the existing Content Team members at the beginning of July, 2021 and a confidential 2-week consultation process was followed to gather feedback on the initial proposal. This concluded last week. This review was posted on the day we announced a restructure of our content team. It was an emotional response to a business decision. It is always unsettling when these things are announced in a business, but I think it is important I respond to each point in this review just so there is a balanced view/perspective: This review indicates there have been many large redundancies across multiple departments recently. This isn’t factually correct. EP has hired 100+ people in the last 12-months and we now have 200 EPeeps in the team. We are constantly evolving and growing across the business, and with this comes changes within teams as we continuously improve the way we do things. The only department impacted in this recent restructure is the Content Team and this restructure only impacts 7 of the team, with 3 brand new roles being created and overall a higher investment in this area of the business. According to NZ law you need to keep any restructure consultation confidential. To state that I or the management team were not being supportive or open and transparent is not accurate. It was important for us to respect the process and ensure we listened to feedback from the impacted team before making a decision and communicating more broadly. I stand by this as we need to be respectful to all the team through the process. We are also being very supportive and generous to anyone being impacted. Far exceeding the government minimum. Since joining EP I have championed various initiatives including our annual wellness benefit, annual team All Staff event in Dunedin HQ, professional development budget per EPeep, flexible work from home policy, climate club, Ngā Pou Whirinaki (our internal Pillars of Support group), B Corp certification and our recent Rainbow Tick accreditation. I’m passionate about creating change and as we take the journey we need to celebrate the milestones. All my comms were open in our Slack channels for all our EPeeps to see. To be called out as a bully and discriminating is just unfair and I'm being personally targeted when my name is being called out specifically. Change isn't easy, but you need to do it. Our focus hasn't changed. EP is continually looking to improve the business and set foundations for future growth. We're working in an ever changing education market with COVID and we must continuously improve to stay a market leader. We will continue to invest in the team and hire more during 2021 and 2022. And we will continue to focus on getting the right people in the right roles. Onwards and upwards, Alex
