Pros

International and inclusive environment: Colleagues come from all over the world; English is the working language, and diversity is genuinely valued. Work-life balance: Flexible working hours, hybrid/remote options (depending on team), and a strong focus on employee well-being. Professional development: Opportunities to attend conferences, workshops, and internal training programs. Managers generally support skill growth and learning. Good benefits: Competitive salary for the public sector, pension plan, 30+ days holiday, and family-friendly policies.

Cons

None that I can think of.

Pros

Canteen, Diversity, Good for young scientists, Campus is beautiful

Cons

there are a few questions to which the answers should be made public, as i do not suppose these are anyhow confidential considering intergovernmental status... - how much did the organisation paid in bonuses to the Management of the companies owned in the last 5 years; - names of the persons who obtained Open-Ended Contracts with the information when it happened, and why; - info on how many family members/partners/former work colleagues of the current employees were hired and why; - Directors' / Senior Management remuneration apart from the basic salaries (consiltancies, etc.)

Pros

A truly international organisation, with the opportunity to work closely with colleagues from a diverse range of nationalities that you wouldn’t otherwise get to in your average UK-based organisation A real sense of satisfaction gained from being part of an organisation with a benevolent mission Fantastic benefits (apart from the pension). Generous family-related allowances, health insurance etc

Cons

UK-based Professional Services staff experience a significant disadvantage in terms of reward and career development compared to their Heidelberg-based counterparts. Pension looks great at first glance, but delve a little deeper and it is actually a bit below the curve compared to that which you would expect from the average UK private sector equivalent

Pros

Great casino and cafeteria (which is necessary, since the Heidelberg site is literally in the middle of the woods). State of the art equipment and computing facilities. Nice colleagues, very active social life.

Cons

The remote campus sometimes makes EMBL feel a bit disconnected from Heidelberg itself. The number of people working at EMBL grows substantially faster than the number of offices, so offices spaces are really tight. There is substantial discrimination between staff and (both PhD and postdoctoral) fellows w.r.t. to how the salaries are inflation adjusted. Part of the social life is a strong party culture (e.g., and Oktoberfest), which I personally found a bit out of place in Autumn 2022.

Pros

International colleagues, good food, nice view

Cons

Personal witness and experience (personal and by proxy) of: abuse of power, bullying, partiality, intransparency in job extensions, nepotism, bad conditions if returning into national social security systems in europe => terrible pension scheme!; no opportunities for promotions in admin; very poor maternity leave conditions. Atmosphere of fear in our team.
