Pros

There were some pros about the place but most are somewhat superficial. Yes you can bring your dog to work, yes there is a very cool and open office space in a funky old building. The trays of meat and cheese that show up along with snacks in all the lunch room areas are great. It really kind of ends there....as far as the pros go from the company offerings perspective. There are some very bright people working at the place that you can learn a lot from if you are a junior level resource just getting started.

Cons

Politics Ok let us acknowledge right up front that every place on the planet has politics and some game playing going on. D2L sets the bar high here as there are politics and there us downright underhanded two faced double talk within the management layer and with senior level leadership all the way to the C level suite. Things are not as they appear on the surface and the direct approach is never taken, instead tight little cliques are formed especially within the Customer Support group where chatter and grade school level behaviour is generated from the top down. Pennywise and Pound Foolish Held together with sticks and glue as well as a smattering of hope and finger crossing is how I would characterize the business and underpinning services/infrastructure. When a company is constantly pushing teams to do more with dated gear and refusing to invest in improvements yet continue to throw new services onto the pile something has to give. What is giving is quality engineers and sys admins throwing their hands up and walking out the door in frustration after being asked to do the impossible yet again. False Promises & Hostility are close Bed Fellows at D2L Were gonna IPO...any day now! Empty and hollow at best the paper these options were printed on is worth more to start a fire in the backyard on a cold night. The IPO carrot gets trotted around like a holy grail that will be riding in any moment and we will all roll around in money shortly thereafter, this train has left the station...any buyer who digs a little bit will see how thin the veneer is rather quickly. I can say on more than one occasion I was confronted and harassed for being one of those EX-RIM people and was warned that this was not BlackBerry and to stop trying to make it like BlackBerry. These confrontations were with senior members of the management layer and were beyond unprofessional. I deeply regret a lot of my time at this company and in hindsight should have remained at RIM rather than jumping onto this ship. Buzzword Bonanza! Prevalent amongst leadership levels especially is the habit of trotting out or all out making up some buzzworthy word/statement that will rally the troops one more time. There is no substance or support underneath the words and statements though.

Pros

I struggle to think of any.

Cons

Don't believe any of the promises they make during the hiring process. They lie. Just like employees, they'll promise anything to get clients in the door. Nearly all regret it very quickly. Questionable business ethics. The CEOs friends and family work in nearly every department... and not because they're incredibly skilled. Makes it impossible to get good work done. The CEO is a narcissistic man-baby who has no business still running this company. They refer to themselves as a "start-up" but they've been in business for almost 20 years. In the tech world that's a dinosaur... and that's a better description for the company. They're based in Kitchener, ON, which is awesome... If you like homeless shelters and seedy hotels. The company is bleeding talent on a daily basis. Anyone with talent doesn't stay long. Don't be the next victim of their false promises. Oh, and it should be obvious they reward employees for leaving good reviews. Don't believe the "Great Place to Work!" posts. More lies.

Things going downhill

Pros

The people are the best, the culture is still holding on in some ways. Customers are great. Salaries are descent.

Cons

I'm so sad to watch what is happening at D2L currently. Having been around when they were private vs public now, it is really disheartening. The culture and mission of D2L has remained the same, but the treatment of employees is terrible. Layoffs regularly now, and very little communication, so much stress on end of month, end of quarter that people are forgetting the bigger picture. One bad quarter and you could be out of a job. People cannot function at their best with that kind of pressure. People working SO hard but the only thing that matters is the bottom line. CEO totally out of touch and a new president that seems to have NO idea what is going on and for the most part joins calls to bark at employees and scare them. Not where they should be with benefits, salary and overall benefits package.
