Pros

There will be so many challenges over the next four years that the progressive movement is going to need to be in an "all hands on deck" mode. CREDO has been a critically important funder, champion and amplifier of civil rights, social justice, women's rights and so many other causes. You will be surrounded by many colleagues that believe in this fight and even a few that have helped shape it.

Cons

But this isn't the same CREDO it was a decade ago. Many of us had hoped our new CEO would help revive the product that funds most of our work, address some of the toxic aspects of our culture that had been allowed to flourish, stop the brain drain and refocus our efforts. Instead the executive team is more insular than ever, dismisses opinions that differ from their own and makes decisions that are against everything we stand for. Instead of things getting better, since his arrival we have gotten into bed with a union-busting business partner. We have reduced the amount we give to progressive not-for-profits by tens of thousands of dollars every month. We turned our focus away from the important causes on the ballot across the country and we have spent lavishly on things that we could have gone without. Instead of fixing any of these problems our new CEO is here responding to current and former employees with Michelle Obama quotes that were originally aimed at Donald Trump. That is how he sees and treats dissent. It is terrifying how out of touch we have become.

While we agree with the Pros, we’d add that we believe in our powerful, united voice for progressive change. We also have incredible benefits, competitive pay and a great work environment. The truth is that we have been making fundamental changes to our business; a new network, new systems, processes and people. Change is hard, and it is certainly more difficult for some than others. We have had employees leave, and we’ve had incredibly talented and capable new team members join. As we progress through our change, some team members are uncomfortable in this new environment. If you’re considering a position with CREDO, you’ll find a smart, motivated team looking for more progressive-minded, smart and friendly people to join us.

Pros

Almost everyone joined to work to make the world a better place. You have some great colleagues to work with.

Cons

But of the fifteen people hired over the past year, more than ten of them have quit or been fired. The environment has become toxic and our new CEO is arrogant (not a team player).

Like family, CREDO is a love/hate relationship

Pros

Incredibly warm people and family atmosphere. Though hierarchy is respected, everyone has direct access and face time with executive staff. Sharing feedback is not discouraged, and involvement across teams is typically welcomed when done with the right attitude. If you share CREDO's political values, it is very refreshing to feel aligned with most coworkers this way. Benefits are great, and generous with many outings and team building events. Performance plays a large part in annual salary, and those with good managers who coach them throughout the year on performance are rewarded well and fairly. Data and Analytics is highly valued at CREDO and when understood is the best tool to push action. The analytical team is very large and incredibly skilled. When ideas and suggestions can be backed by data, wheels begin turning, but it requires being vocal and determined to ensure all are aware.

Cons

The company is top-heavy in a way that is a bit ridiculous. The number of managers, directors and executive titles outnumber non-manager employees. Managers have little decision-making power and directors are what most companies would call managers. Working hard will get one ahead when combined with an aggressive rogue spirit, but most rise up through management by typical office posturing of non-sensical reporting, exhausting email chains and what should be obvious attempts to appear valuable. Though risk-taking is encouraged in word, fear of even small failures causes a lot of foot dragging and resistance to act. Paradoxically, when risks are taken, they tend to put a huge amount at stake and reasoning is based on gut feelings, without backup or escape plans should they fail. Basically, the company fails big and fails slowly, instead of failing small and quick on a path of steady success. Though I was not a bottom rung employee, those on the front lines tend to receive the fallout and blame for all failures and rarely did I witness upper management own responsibility or blame in any situations. Blame always moved downward, lowering respect and ultimately trust in management over time.
