Pros

I started here when I was an intern then got hired full time. I got great satisfaction from working the grantee partners, forming relationships with the point of Contacts, and seeing how the grants helped them.

Cons

The environment is very toxic and racist. I felt like leadership gatekeep information from all staffers. Most of the time I felt like important information was shared only last minute or I hear it from someone else information. Being a POC I felt very uncomfortable. I recommend avoiding this place.

We take feedback like this very seriously as they go against the culture we have been working to create over the past few years under the leadership of our CEO and head of HR. Some data points for context: CRUS has engaged with outside DEI experts to provide organizational and individual coaching. We provided listening sessions for staff and actioned on the feedback received to continue with our DEI development, implementing mandatory feedback sessions and strategy discussions where information is shared more freely. We value the input of our team members and we broadly share information electronically, printed, and within meetings.

Pros

Got a ton of experience and got to shape my career to gain the skills I wanted/needed to advance professionally. Strong alumni network - former employees go on to do great things. Met some nice famous people. Made friends I’ll keep for life. If I could do it over again I would still accept the role but lower my expectations for promotions or fair pay, keep my head down and avoid working to the point of burnout.

Cons

Negative reviews are accurate, textbook dysfunctional workplace. Most of leadership is inept and more concerned with optics than with furthering the mission (Grants VP and Producers excluded). Despite running the same basic campaign year after year, it was always a deeply chaotic and stressful process. Company culture was the worst of anywhere I’ve worked. Lots of talking the talk and not walking the walk. Homogeneous and very white at the top.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and feedback with us. We appreciate and value all input. CRUS continues to flex and adjust to external and internal stressors as we grow as an organization. As we expressed in the other responses CRUS prides itself on our diverse team and leadership. We rely on the diverse backgrounds of all of our team members - full-time or freelance to meet our fundraising goals. It can feel overwhelming when small organizations are in growth phases and new and different processes are introduced to the culture.
