Pros

None. I wouldn’t wish anyone to work here as a graduate or just starting a career. They feed you with lies and empty promises. No structure in place. Within 1 month I went in a state of depression.

Cons

. I wouldn’t want anyone, especially graduates to go through what I went through, so I will be as detailed as possible for those considering working for Colas in Leeds. I had three offers for a graduate scheme and unfortunately for me I chose Colas based on the fact that I was promised to have the best training and would be looked after. On my first day I was approached by several employees who told me I made a mistake joining the company due to bad management team that stall employees training and development. From my first week I was forced to work 50 hours a week (7am to 5pm) even though my contract stated 37.5 hours. I was not paid overtime. When I tried to bring this up they threatened to fire me in front of co-workers. I was told that whoever interviewed me during the hiring process sold a fantasy to me and was clueless as to how things are done in Leeds, that they could treat me how they pleased. I was devastated by this and I began to regret my decision joining the company. I was meant to be shadowing one of the engineers but he made me feel I was a burden to him and would ignore me when I tried to ask questions relating to the job. He would abandon me on site and tell me my main purpose on site is to be an extra man so they could account for labour cost from their client. I got Ill from going to site, I was left on site in harsh weather conditions doing nothing with no one to learn from or help me understand what was going on on site. It is against company policy to use a personal car that is not business insured to site. The management went against the policy and forced me to use my car to site.. When I told them I wasn’t business insured and wouldn’t like to use my car to travel 15 miles to site they threatened to fire me. They also said they would reimburse me for fuel but they never did. Confidentiality was another issue. Personal matters were never in confidence. Everyone knew your business and would gossip intensively in detail. I was meant to be given a new company phone but the manager refused to give me one. After several complaints I was given an old phone that was used by a former employee, I could see personal/sensitive messages that I shouldn’t have access to. This is just a summary of my experience as there is a whole lot more to share. My experience led me to a state of depression. The manager told me depression was common and I have to overcome it. Colas almost made my passion for engineering become a nightmare. Luckily for me I found another graduate role with another company abroad that has a well structured graduate programme and treats me like a valued individual on their team.

Pros

Aside from work, the people I worked with were great.

Cons

Well where can I start. I had two offers and unfortunately I chose this as I was basically sold a dream on how this is the best company to work for and I will learn and develop a lot within my field of civil engineering. After starting I soon realised within the first week I made a pretty bad decision. Developement - well none existent. I came in as a graduate civil engineer however I was given tasks that seemed as if I was a gradaute administrator. Whether that be ordering materials or office supplies, I was pretty much the guy for that. Within the first 3 months, I learnt 0 engineering and everything admin / ordering. Also tasks other employees couldn't be arsed to do, I sort of had to do those as well and if not completed I would get shouted at like as if I was meant to be doing it anyways, I spent my first 3 months sat in the office and rarely got to go out even though my job is to be out on site most of the time learning. Line manager wasn't no help either, most emails were left unread in their inbox. Management also do not care for your concerns and if you are leaving don't even bother asking you whats the reason and if they could do anything help. It's as if the world can end but as long as the project gets completed they are happy. Benefits - none at all. Not even car allowance. The other gradaute had their public transport paid for and other employees that were employed had their car paid for yet I had to fork out for my own car and expected to use time to time to carry these little tasks on site. When asked if I could receive one, I was told a lie and how my project is my base location and not the main office in Bishops Court even though my contract stated that. Working within this company made my contemplate at one time whether I picked the right industry to go into, however, luckily I was able to escape and find a reputable and better company that helped restore that motivation within me.

Pros

Some of the people are nice, free onsite parking. Not much else I can think of for the benefits for working for Colas

Cons

Management! Don’t join this organisation unless you are willing to keep your head down, mouth shut and work long hours. Employees feel guilty talking to each other in the hallway. The person before me left a note on our desk advising that she left because of the bad culture - I should’ve taken her advice! Not many people have worked there very long unless they are management or the heads down mouth shut type person. Turn over was very high and they sack people for illegal reasons.
