Lack of skill, management and direction within IT

Pros

Free lunch, decent holiday allowance.

Cons

The free lunch is, rather than being a staff benefit, is more for keeping you in the office to work. On the face of things the company tries to display how much effort it puts in to employee well-being. My experience was otherwise. There is an apparent lack of planning within the IT department, which is managed by a select few that are less than management material. Contrary the IT director is a decent human being but perhaps does not realise the extent of the lack of professionalism within the department. I could very easily be unprofessional in my comments here, but I am professional - so I won't. The work/life balance in this brash company needs addressing. It was a great shame for me, I expected better from this market leader.

Pros

Highly respected in the global shipping industry. Wealth of industry knowledge and experience at the company. Good working benefits e.g. free lunch.

Cons

Management are too busy to be able to manage teams properly. Examples of alarmingly poor working standards and unprofessional behaviour, especially among senior members of staff e.g. bullying, aggression and bad-mouthing (ex) colleagues are all common place. Creates a generally negative working environment. Significant lack of diversity at all levels, senior management do not appear to be actively working to remedy this. Pay structure is deliberately opaque. Little respect for employees' personal time. Overtime very much expected, and met with little to no recognition.

Pros

Clarksons is well known in shipping so it's a good name to have on your CV. There is a lot of expertise within the organization.

Cons

Organizational structure is deeply hierarchical. Management rule by decree. Very stuffy 'male pale and stale'. Shouting matches across the office are not unusual, particular staff members frequently moved to tears as a result. Bullying is open. Every process and product is micromanaged. Management often behave in ways that would be deemed unacceptable in other workplaces or indeed most general spheres of life. Pay structure is opaque and employees are instructed not to discuss their salaries. Expectations are high, hours can be very long, staff are often highly stressed. Work life balance is terrible.
