      Not Safe for People of Color

      Pros

      Most of the people in this office are wonderful, dedicated, and progressive The pay is also great for a public defender office.

      Cons

      Despite the overall progressive minded staff, the rigid top down structure of the organization renders the culture of the office toxic, particularly for people of color. A white victimhood complex predominates upper management, ensuring that attempts to meaningfully address bias are met with, at best, cold indifference, and at worst, outright hostility. Staff of color are also subjected to microaggressions, and are treated like sentient potential lawsuits instead of human beings. As a result, the retention rate of attorneys of color is abysmal.

      Toxic Place with Toxic White Management

      Great, passionate fellow attorneys and paralegals who genuinely believe in doing the good work that they’re doing

      Cons

      Upper management is waging a war against attorneys of color. They’ve never been particularly good or supportive of them, but within the past few years it has become full out toxic — gaslighting, being dismissive and disrespectful, completely putting their heads in the sand when they are told their actions are harmful. CAL purports to be social Justice driven in the public defense space, but how can the org be trusted to carry out its mission to its clients when it treats its own staff like this? Absolutely terrible. Do NOT go here if you are an attorney (or paralegal) of color, they do not care about you.

      - Really nice to start with a class of people for support - Some really thoughtful supervisors - Since I left, the office has unionized and the office make-up has changed--I'm told, for the better

      - Office politics that were hard to decipher - Old guard of supervisor attorneys
