Pros

• Overall - large 401k contribution (no match requirement); passionate and talented contributor level staff, good benefits (healthcare, PTO, VTO) • Pre-pandemic - extensive travel, healthy budget for a non-profit, large bonus potential

Cons

• Top heavy with senior level leaders • Poor revenue diversification model as highlighted by the major decrease in revenue as a result of a failure to pivot to computer-based testing efficiently in the pandemic • Contributor level is doing 2+ jobs due to departures, hiring freezes, and a focus on hiring Senior Directors and above • Charlottesville staff become the dumping ground for regional and crossover work as the other regional offices are protected for their own initiatives • Working in a department with counterparts in other regions means regular calls at 7AM ET to as late as 9PM • Layoffs and restructures more common than not • Very little growth potential once you hit manager level, with gaslighting about promotions that are only offered when you threaten to leave • Annual salary and bonuses are given out on strict bell curve and enforced strictly within teams causing even high performing teams to have to deem some as “Needs Improvement” • Initiatives are constantly added, dropped, or reprioritized leaving to a lot of whip lash and challenges in explaining to stakeholders an accurate timeline of where things stand

Pros

- Pockets of highly educated and very talented people - Unbeatable benefits in Charlottesville - Global travel for certain positions

Cons

- Egregious review process: zero effort made to reset expectations or coach underperforming employees (and there are a number of long-term Directors who don't pull their weight), coupled with a secretive layoff process - Politics, politics, politics - Bloated organizational structure: more Director level positions than lower level positions to do the work - Disrespect for FTE skillsets and overreliance on vendors - Lack of consistent strategic direction = lack of real impact. Constant change, no change management. Employees reshuffled every few months. - Major burnout in certain areas, especially technology-related positions - Untransparent career progression (see politics above): Good luck finding anyone under the age of 35 who enjoys working there or plans to stay

Pros

The CFA Institute has a beautiful, modern office with a great cafe fairly close to the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville. Work/life balance and benefits are good, pay is above-average for the area, and it does attempt to incorporate the latest in marketing and IT software and methods, along with sending employees to annual seminars and symposiums.

Cons

There are reorganizations that do not make sense to the point where some people have no clue what their roles cover - but everyone gets an "important" title (Head, Director, Manager). And the CFA Institute, unfortunately, is marred by a corporate, elitist atmosphere and snobbish people and an open office plan where you cannot escape from them. Perhaps this is due to the global nature of the organization and the wealthy individuals to whom it caters, or a microcosm of the investment management field in general, but it does not need to carry over to the everyday operation. Also, unless you consider blonde, brunette, and redhead to be ethnic groups, or include the Indian contractors, the CFA Institute is woefully lacking in diversity. African American, Latino, and Asian employees are few and far between, which is ironic for an organization that is now seeing the majority of its candidates come from India and China, and a city in Charlottesville with a major public university but that is still reeling from a violent fascist march less than two years ago.
