Brilliant product, difficult company

Pros

Butterfly's mission is a compelling one and they've built an impressive product that truly addresses a key unmet need in the ultrasound space. If they are successful, they will bring this critical technology to care settings that sorely need it. It's truly rewarding to see physician enthusiasm for the technology. There are incredibly smart, motivated individuals working at the company.

Cons

Caveat emptor as far as choosing to work there. Some teams are great, but others struggle with toxic leadership dynamics. Management's argument is that they need to ship product ASAP and can focus on making cultural adjustments later, but they're slowly building a place where people won't want to work and eventually the product will suffer as a result.

Fail and Be Rewarded

Pros

Employees at the IC and first tier of management are generally great people who work extremely hard. 5/5 stars for them.

Cons

Actions reveal character, therefore let us study how rewards are distributed: - CEO hired in 2019, accomplishes nothing except expressing enthusiasm, fired in 2020, rewarded with millions. - COO hired in 2020, makes noise without actually changing anything, fired in 2021, rewarded with millions - CHRO hired and fired in 2021, allowed to stay on until he can collect some stock, rewarded with 1 million+ - Current CEO hired in 2021, whines about how difficult the job is, tells us to be patient, tells us to go faster, requires people to move to the unfinished HQ but doesn't move himself, the list goes on. > Note: CEO approval rating is a lie. I interact with maybe 50 people on a regular basis and **zero** of them approve of the CEO. Most openly disdain him. - Current CTO talks about the roadmap but approval and action are always just a few more months away. - VP level is a mixed bag, most seem to be running the clock and trying to avoid fallout from the next C-level firing.

Pros

- Very cool and innovative tech - Free lunches - Extremely smart and talented coworkers

Cons

- Mass exodus of engineers. This has been caused by a number of issues including low pay, crass C-Suite management, horrible work life balance, and talks about moving people to Boston. The response has been to do mass hiring to backfill the huge exodus, but before I left there was talk of even some new hires leaving as they realized what they walked into. - Horrible work life balance. Seriously, there are some people who work 11 hour days every single day. There is "unlimited PTO" but most people are afraid to use it. You'll get IM's from people past midnight. The entire idea is that this job should be your life. - I'm not even sure if this company has a culture. During my entire tenure here the concept of "values" or anything of the sort has never really been emphasized. Slack is completely dead and no one talks to one another. I know nothing about people I have worked with for years. You get messages from complete strangers who don't even introduce themselves. I have never worked anywhere in my life that was so cold, sterile, and robotic. - Individual contributors don't have a voice in anything. Long term plans for your job are made without your input. Large scale company wide decisions are made in private. It was always amazing to me that the people who make Butterfly run are the last ones who get to determine its direction.
