Repeatedly Hitting Head Against Wall

Pros

- Very talented engineering and partner integration teams. - Free lunch.

Cons

Despite the engineering hype, the sales side, ie "partner growth" is an utter failure. Management is populated by people with no experience in closing deals, and it shows; numbers are being missed in major ways, and the plan for fixing it is largely to work harder at the same failing methods. You will have absolutely zero work life balance if you work here, and not in a cute way. I've never seen a company where people are this tired, and miss this much work because of illness. Any talk of "marathon of sprints" is simply indicative of the immaturity of the founders. And again, the sad part is that it's needless- the company does not get better results, it just gets burned out employees. The professed cultural values are lessons in hypocrisy. "Radical transparency" is a pure lie, the company is crippled by political battles, and the founders govern not by any input from teams, but by what their own beliefs are. I'm writing this over Glassdoor, because providing feedback via the company's own methods is a surefire way to fall out of favor with the management. Image is everything with Branch; many of the reviews here are fake, and the company very actively solicits employees to rate the company as 5-stars upon joining. DO NOT believe their internal hype.

Branch Needs A New CEO

Pros

* Free lunch - before COVID lunches were provided by the company and ordered dinner if people work late. * Average medical/dental/vision benefits. * Coworkers were generally very friendly. * Opportunity to work with big data pipeline.

Cons

As a preface to this, I survived the mass firing in January and the mass layoffs following COVID. The cons I've detailed below are key factors to my decision to move on. 1. Engineering Approach: Theoretically there could be some really interesting learning opportunities here - between the big data attribution pipeline and the discovery work and exposure to data science and machine learning. However, what you end up learning are things NOT to do, which is not particularly helpful to career growth and development. This problem is due to the lack of business analysis and risk assessments, resulting in poor planning, engineers not understanding the customer impact of their work, and a lack of technical design/engineering practices. The emphasis is consistently on time to deliver to the detriment of all else. This leaves engineers scrambling to get something done on time without a clear understanding of what is actually needed. Additionally the work is doled out in a silo - specific tasks assigned to specific engineers, so there is very limited knowledge sharing and generally no team-level understanding of the systems. Lastly this leads to on-going system stability issues (see other reviewers' comments about customer-facing availability problems) and a terrible tech debt backlog. During my tenure I didn't learn any good practices or techniques - just things to avoid. 2. Politics: As some other reviewers have stated, there are definitely undercurrents of favoritism and nepotism at Branch. It's demoralizing to see people who've only had a handful of years of experience at ONLY Branch being promoted into Staff Engineer roles, while so many other more qualified and more experienced engineers were passed over. Also the "shout-outs" the CEO highlights are mainly for people working long hours either to resolve an outage or to get something done by a time deadline. This makes it clear that working long hours to save the company from poor planning is what's valued the most. A side-effect of this is that good engineers are left wondering about how they are valued. If it's clear the company can't do planning, and doesn't recognize the importance of good engineering skills, then how can anyone feel comfortable believing they are or could ever be fairly evaluated? Bottom line - it's about who you're making happy and how many hours you are willing to put in to repeatedly save Branch from the overpromises of the CEO. 3. Diversity: The majority of the leaders of diversity trainings and initiatives and ERG leads were let go in the layoffs. It was a clear signal that diversity at Branch is not valued. 4. Trust: The CEO utterly mishandled the firings in January and the "covid" layoffs in the spring. Multiple people were let go in January without warning and were "fired" even though they had no PIP, no indicators, and had actually had good reviews. Then the layoffs happened after only 3 weeks earlier we were assured that the company was fine and that worst-case planning had been done. Because of that communication, it left me wondering if we were intentionally misled or if the CEO is not competent enough to actually do worst-case planning. In either case, I lost all trust in anything the leadership said after that point because I couldn't count on it to be true. Many people felt very unsure of their job security after this, which made the work environment way more stressful and I assume is a significant factor to the subsequent attrition.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. I’m sorry you are so disappointed with your experience at Branch. We value all of our current and former employees’s feedback and it is important for us to hear what we need to improve upon. As you may know, we’ve spent a great deal of time and effort in the last few years to build something amazing, a product that supports innovation and collaboration, and where our leaders embrace a ‘don’t fear failure’ mindset. I’m surprised hearing your personal experience on favoritism and politics because they are the complete opposite of our core values. Our culture is built on transparency and fairness. We strongly encourage feedback through anonymous surveys, 1:1s & founders forum, and most of our changes are sourced from our employees directly over the years. I also want to call out that Diversity has always been valued at Branch from day 1 and we are committed to building a rich diverse team. We also took a strong stance to combat inequality and systemic racism through things like our “ Tech for Black Founders” initiative and our pledge. I’m sorry that you felt these things in your experience and hope you've found something new that makes you happy. If you are open and willing to share additional feedback, please send them my way and I’m always open to chat live.

RUN!! Branch will DRAIN YOUR SOUL and toss you out

Pros

The competitive landscape isn't fierce. This is the only reason why this company can still exist.

Cons

- Branch will DRAIN YOUR SOUL and once they're done with you they will toss you out. The recent covid layoff has left alot of existing employees feeling stressed and saddened by the departure of members of their teams. Instead of boosting morale, Branch held an All-Hands to let everyone left know that "everyone who remains are essential". This was upsetting to hear because not only was this disrespectful for folks who were laid off, there were high-performers who were let go in roles in which Branch proceeded to HIRE FOR within a month of the layoff. It's HORRIBLE they used this pandemic to their advantage. - Company first, EMPLOYEES LAST: Branch put their people last and generally all they care about is their company image. During the pandemic period, instead of empathizing with the situation and ensuring people are taken care of, repeatedly during all-hands, all that was drilled into our heads was our job was “to keep Branch alive" and everyone needs to "work even harder”. Basically also telling us that we had to “get over it” anytime someone feels stressed. The C-level leadership micromanages every aspect of the company and has no trust in their employees. Regardless of how hard people are working, it will NEVER be enough for this company. Leadership needs to understand you can build a culture of running fast and being lean by empowering your employees. NOT by treating them like a number and being passive aggressive about how hard everyone needs to work. - The WORST management team I've ever worked under. I’ve lost brain cells sitting in QBRs, All Hands, and any meeting with management. The reason why the leadership team is consistently bad is because Branch tends to hire folks who are okay with keeping their mouths shut and do what they are told. Do yourself a favor and RUN now to save your career. I rather be job searching during a pandemic than continue to contribute to a toxic and selfish culture.

We're incredibly sorry to hear your feedback and appreciate you taking the time to voice it. I understand that it is difficult when someone is let go, and might create feelings of animosity despite what was otherwise a good experience, but we value your input and take feedback seriously. We are disappointed that you felt that your experience was not valued. Saying goodbye to our team members was an incredibly difficult decision and one that happened because of the effects of COVID-19. This doesn't make it any easier. We strongly believed that if we are aggressive, early enough, that we stand a better chance to prepare for what economists believe will be one of the greatest economic downturns that the world has experienced. We’re living in an unprecedented time with things changing every day. For those affected, we’ve done everything we could to make sure they’re put in a position to quickly find new jobs and stay healthy during this crisis. I would say that while I admit we can do better, especially during these hard times, the past few years have seen a dramatic improvement in the number of resources we put on employee growth and support, from increasing development budgets to frequent manager and leadership trainings, to having ERGs, to many opportunities for employees who want to switch teams and try out new roles. The leadership encourages and emphasizes the importance of work life balance and overall mental health of employees. We strongly advocate for employees to take vacations and down time from work to enable them to sustain performance, productivity, creativity and prevent burnout.
