Pros

Incredibly smart colleagues, interesting work at times

Cons

This place is exhausting and not well-run. You’ll hear “this is a startup” with frequency, but that’s ultimately a cop out to excuse the real cause, which is poor leadership. The constant changing of priorities, the lack of business vision or strategy means you’ll be killing yourself to meet an impossible deadline only to find out that the initiative is on hold or cancelled altogether. Hours are long with early morning or late night meetings due to timezones. Morale is low, exec teams don’t communicate with the rest of the company, operate from a place of distrust with their teams, and the HK office is running the US without any understanding of US culture or workplace expectations (they wanted the US to go back to the office a month into the pandemic because HK was back in the office, even though the entire country was shut down and numbers were spiking because they didn’t trust their employees to WFH). Work environment was hostile at times. Everyone I know is actively looking for new jobs and attrition is high. People are laid off with frequency. Overall, I do not recommend Block.one and don’t feel confident with the exec team in place that any of this will change.

Pros

High concentration of competent and smart people. A relatively flat corporate structure with a collaborative culture.

Cons

The entire company lacks operational discipline so deadlines are all relative. Part of the problem lies with stuff and decisions changing all the time which is frustrating so a lot of work goes to waste. While few are particularly perfectionistic, it takes forever to try and get things right - due to the ample funding. Little evidence to show that the company was making revenue. Lots of projects end up being stuck in Beta forever. Although a startup, it lacks many of the advantages of nimbleness cos things take forever to materialize. Also weirdly, the level of red-tape there is comparable to a large company. Little benefits of a startup while having the cons of a bureaucracy. The CEO happens to be a standout fundraiser however there is little evidence of the company able to generate any revenue. He is prone to constantly shifting preferences and once changed his mind on a logo 30 times. At the time I was there, no one in the c-suite was really showing leadership. The way they operate is to hire a brunch of smart people and let them figure out things on their own. This works well for maybe 10 or 20 percent of most people. Turnover is high - many left due to a lack of clear direction. Terminations happen quite often as well and aren’t usually addressed, which gave us the impression that the place operates on whims and fancies. Culture tends not to focus on execution, and def a place where some people like to pretend. There are a ton of meetings required but all of the discussion will only result in a small output.

Great pay, poor culture

Pros

This is the place to be if all you need is a steady paycheck.

Cons

Nepotism resulting in the wrong person for the job due to inexperience. Office politics which severely impacted productivity and morale. Yes Man expectations instead of fruitful debates on actionable next steps. Too many moving parts in projects, teams are siloed, and there's little to no transparency across the teams and levels. Flat hierarchy does not exist. Company's objectives change on a quarterly basis resulting in hard work with few results.
