Pros

A ton of dogs in the office. I love dogs, so, total win there at least Hard-working teammates, many of whom are true animal lovers Chinatown location, so good food nearby

Cons

* Managers that have no idea what they are doing. * Open plan nightmare hellscape with pop music blaring constantly. Introverted? Anxiety-prone? Good luck. * 1:1 meetings with your manager that are utterly meaningless. They do them because they think they are supposed to, but you just have to agree and say you love working there. Or else. * Culture of yes. Agree and cheerlead and woof woof woof in meetings and they pat you on the head. Suggest room for change and improvement and you're headed for the kill shelter. * Frat boy, keg stand, party hard, booze culture. Great if you are a frat boy, not so great if you care more about your career than beer pong * Uncomfortably sexualized atmosphere. I was asked a number of times if I wanted to see a picture of an NBA player's genitals and it was almost shown on a display screen in a meeting, but thankfully someone senior advised against it. Sexual innuendo was commonplace in meetings. * We had a company trip to Disneyland. It sounds cool, but my roommate ended up having sexy shower time with one of the new hires, so I had to make myself scarce when I wanted to go to bed. So professional! * As lofty and high-minded as they spin it, it is a subscription box company. Woo hoo, they have 500,000 subscribers. 2 years ago they had about 200,000. That's not that impressive in terms of growth. I've had better luck with my houseplants. * After 2 years here, I saw they don't really care about dogs, they care about money. Dogs are annoying to upper management, I felt at times. If you are thinking about working here, don't get duped by the smooshy feel-good "we love dogs" line. Work elsewhere and volunteer at a shelter if you want to help dogs.

Shiny on the outside

Pros

Like many reviews from the past have said the best aspect of working for Bark is the people around you. For the most part some of the hardest working and talented people I have ever met. The perks are nice I suppose but they feel like a way to entice talent with shiny trinkets, not enhance the everyday experience of working at bark. How much beer are you really going to drink?

Cons

In my opinion there are a few but those few are huge and make this an environment that’s near impossible to work in if you have experience and truly care about the work you do. -It very much seems like there are two types of people working here. Ones that care about the work they do and making sure everything is done well and on time and those that coast on their backs. Coming in sparingly and taking advantage of having been there for longer. The issue is that these two groups are treated the same. As in, management are either too busy or just don’t care to change the behavior. I understand wanting to foster an open working environment where if the work is done then you don’t need to come in but with that responsibility needs to be oversight. -there is zero transparency despite the founders touting it at every turn. For the better part of six months the entire e-comm department didn’t know if they had jobs and entire teams were still doing huge projects for them despite the founders knowing the department was being shuttered. It was apparently announced in the beginning of January by the CEO that they were closing the department but nothing was discussed further leaving everyone still in the dark. -the amount of money that flows out of the company for frivolous things is staggering. There was an entire company retreat to Columbus Ohio for 4 days where the company paid for last minute flights from nyc to ohio, all room and board, and 4 days of binge drinking in carnival tents. Spending what must have been at least a million dollars. Don’t get me wrong, it was fun but if you can afford that then why do I get paid so little? Why are pay raises frozen? I would have much rather been given 60% of the money you would have spent on me and stayed in New York. I can buy my own beer. There are are way more examples of this but that was the biggest. -people make it up as they go along. Being a startup comes with challenges. You don’t have the answers to how every aspect of a business should work. But that’s why when you become larger and more successful you hire people with experience, which bark does and is proud of. But that’s it. When that experience is attempted to be used there is severe pushback to. The point where nothing gets accomplished. God forbid this is your first job out of college. If it is then you’ll learn the wrong way to everything and be shackled until you’re inevitably fired.

Manipulation Galore

Pros

I had the opportunity to meet a plethora of forever friends at BARK. The folks they employ are absolutely incredible.

Cons

I've been holding off on this review to make sure it didn't come from a place of resentment. But now that it has been several weeks I know what I felt/am feeling is still completely valid. BARK is a playground for emotional manipulation. They throw all of these incredible "opportunities" your way - keep in mind the method of payment when it comes to BARK is experience rather than fairly compensating employees for the work that they do. At BARK you receive so many cool incentives booze, catered food, parties, a luxurious work space but what that all boils down to is smoke and mirrors - a ploy to keep underpaid, overworked, and unhappy employees content. Keep in mind that the way an employer treats their people during a pandemic is very showing (COVID-19) they are doing mass layoffs when there is no sign of ample employment in the future.
