Occasional puppies and well-meaning people. If you work the fundraising department, you will get the experience you need for career growth at another org. It's also silo-ed from the problematic departments (works as it's own little organization).
Cons
Doesn't make nearly the impact on animals they could or should with their budget. Toxic leadership that doesn't value employees, and is the biggest reason for a mass exodus of their best people the past year. Lacks focus, follow-through and innovation.
Working with animals, great team of people, making a difference in the community.
Cons
Poor management who consistently put staff in traumatic situations without support. Poor communication, hostile work environment, burnout, extremely under staffed, no room for growth, low wages.
My coworkers are amazing, some locations are unionized which means more job security, annual raises, benefits typically get better with each round of bargaining, 12 sick days a year, 1 personal day, start at 3 weeks paid vacation for full time employees, RRSP matching for all union positions, not all non union positions have this, bereavement pay, lots more
Cons
The organization heads consistently mess up the budget, they are constantly hiring more positions for provincial office with huge salaries, but pay the people that are actually working with the animals very little. They don't replace staff in the shelters or hospitals when people quit. There is a lot of guilting employees to work harder or stay for OT to care for animals to make up for not enough staff. I think it is probably a different experience for people in roles that don't deal directly with animals.
- passionate people
- make a difference in your community
- help animals
Cons
- constant turnover of staff and managers (poor senior management)
- policies are inconsistently followed and vary by location.
- lack of opportunity for growth
- lack of opportunities to increase wage
- you will have to hold animals as they die
I loved my work
RRSP plan was great
Most people are there for the animals
Cons
Animals euthanized for no reason
You aren't allowed to stand up for the animals when you see what is happening is not in the best interest of the animals
Bullying by Branch Manager
HR doesn't do anything when people complain about bullying
