Saving Animals but...

Pros

I think everyone starts here because of their love of animals and wanting to make a difference in our little piece of the world. The ideology is inspiring and a worthy cause! Saving animals and finding them forever homes is amazing!

Cons

Unless you are an ACO or APO your starting salary is just above minimum wage! Unless you are permanent or in a time durated position for 1yr you will not get a wage increase. In order to gain seniority as an auxiliary (which you will need to work 910 hours in order to have seniority). While the job does have many heart warming feel good moments many more are gut wrenching and at times dangerous. Many employees have PTSD from the things they have witnessed and experienced, and no support to recover from it! The place is riddled with politics and bad communication about policy and procedure, rules vary from shelter to shelter...if you want transparency this is not the place for you! Its unfortunate that the environment is very toxic. I love my job just not the way the shelters are run!

Pros

Occasional puppies and well-meaning people. If you work the fundraising department, you will get the experience you need for career growth at another org. It's also silo-ed from the problematic departments (works as it's own little organization).

Cons

Doesn't make nearly the impact on animals they could or should with their budget. Toxic leadership that doesn't value employees, and is the biggest reason for a mass exodus of their best people the past year. Lacks focus, follow-through and innovation.

Pros

My coworkers are amazing, some locations are unionized which means more job security, annual raises, benefits typically get better with each round of bargaining, 12 sick days a year, 1 personal day, start at 3 weeks paid vacation for full time employees, RRSP matching for all union positions, not all non union positions have this, bereavement pay, lots more

Cons

The organization heads consistently mess up the budget, they are constantly hiring more positions for provincial office with huge salaries, but pay the people that are actually working with the animals very little. They don't replace staff in the shelters or hospitals when people quit. There is a lot of guilting employees to work harder or stay for OT to care for animals to make up for not enough staff. I think it is probably a different experience for people in roles that don't deal directly with animals.

Pros

The team I am in, at least, is incredibly supportive and helpful. My boss and colleagues always reach out to check in and offer guidance. Fulfilling - it's good to know the work you're doing is helping animals! Good vacation time - 4 weeks available after 3 months in Manager role. Tons of resources, lots of ways to learn.

Cons

Takes more 'after hours' work than I anticipated, sometimes late night phone calls with vets or for emergencies - this might be me underestimating rather than an issue with the role. Hard to navigate union employees with delayed bargaining Feels like low compensation for the amount of work being done. Training is a bit sporadic - they put aside time in the beginning to train but then it's hard to find time once you're onboarded since there is so much to do. I feel like I don't know key things because can't find the time to train further. Encourage work life balance but this is hard to actually strike with the work. After hours events sometimes, always on call.
