Top heavy, lacks diversity

Pros

- It's a unique institution with great potential to cement itself as one of the leading voices on Asia. - Lots of smart and talented staff (unfortunately turnover is very high) - Great location/office on Park Avenue - Very good benefits (health insurance, dental reimbursement, vacation package)

Cons

- Management is top heavy. For instance, the entire EA team is filled with directors! - No diversity, especially in higher management. - Crappy salaries. A mid level employee with a masters + several years of experience can make as little as $45-50K. - It's a non-profit but you wouldn't think so, if you saw how much the top 6-7 highest paid employees make. The top two employees, both make more than $1M/year with bonuses.

Toxic, outdated organization

Pros

Knowledgeable, interesting colleagues and Summer Fridays

Cons

Toxic, hierarchical work environment. Senior leadership is overwhelmingly Caucasian with little to no direct knowledge or experience of Asia. Nepotism is rampant and individuals without expertise in the organization's areas of specialty are hired by the CEO. Extremely top heavy with numerous Executive Directors with little to no support staff. Junior staff are intimidated and bullied away from making suggestions to update the colonialist, antiquated model of "educating Americans about Asians" in 2017. Senior staff are paid exorbitant amounts for a nonprofit, despite budget cuts eliminate mid to junior level staff. The institution is the definition of scatteration and mission drift.

Pros

Most colleagues are really interesting, intelligent folks.

Cons

Tons of politicking, "nepotism" and unrealistic expectations force most people to work on weekends just to keep up. Bully tactics from those with too much power to begin with.
