Pros

There are some good, highly qualified staff and faculty around. They are not the majority. These few staff and faculty hold the university together, they are the persons the students trust, and they deliver excellent service and teaching even if they are never recognized or fairly compensated.

Cons

I took a job at Arkansas Tech a few years ago and read "universities to fear" online before I interviewed, and believed it can't be true what the website said. I stand corrected. It was worse. Tech has a culture of fear, cronyism, and church going matters more than research for tenure. You will be better off at a community college.

Pros

The pay and benefits are pretty good. It has the feel of a small university but is also big enough to have the perks of a big university. It is teaching centered, so students get attention from faculty. The university is growing quite rapidly and caters to many first generation and non-traditional students. Tuition has remained very affordable.

Cons

Success as a professional depends a lot on who you know. The staff are not very professional, a lot of things get done by a "call" or a "visit" and not so much through well developed procedures. It is not very diverse in it's student population.

Pros

I love being able to control my weekly schedule and teach a variety of courses. We have academic freedom on how we teach and full control over our courses as well.

Cons

There is more push for meetings and deeper assessments that are not part of your teaching load. Pay is terrible. No cost of living increase in years. College Instructors are paid less than public school teachers in the same town and we have higher degrees and experience. There is no raises or added salary for being good at what you do or sticking around long term. Some administrators are making 3x what we start at though.
