Just Another Firm

Pros

Very difficult to think of pros. At the time the office space was nice and introduction of technology seemed swift.

Cons

You will be yet another cog in yet another firm where leadership is mysterious, segmented and completely opaque to all other employees. Very much a culture of if you had worked there forever you were on the ‘good’ side of leadership, and if you’re new you are just labor to keep churning out the same cookie cutter projects and tasks. No clear path to advancement, no clear bonus structure and always gossip among the leaders about other employees. No forms of training, either technical or professional, for any level of employee from EITs up to project managers. Those with the worst personalities are the most successful because they dehumanize all others and are only focused on wins and doing the work the cheapest way possible.

Pros

Very focused on happiness of employees

Cons

Better communication between departments (talk to the person who will actually work on the project and not a middleman)

Pros

*Ability to work between multiple disciplines, including MOT, roadway design, traffic, ITS *Staff varies at several levels, but includes multiple peers horizontally, as well- a great opportunity to learn from those at similar levels *Company flexibility in allowing staff to travel *VERY flexible work schedule- great plus as a millenial *WONDERFUL people- they truly make the company culture so strong and welcoming

Cons

*Challenge breaking into new markets and establishing identity outside of Minnesota *Fluctuation of design-build is a double-edged sword; work ebbs and flows, making some weeks 60+ hours, while others are 20-30 hours billable *Struggles with recruiting staff at senior level due to competitive market
