Learn how to swim, because this place is the Titanic

Pros

The people we support are wonderful. With their common sense and kindness, I'm sure they could run this place better than it currently is. I wouldn't work here if it weren't for them.

Cons

Leadership. This place is sinking fast and the only people with lifeboats are the executives. And by lifeboats I mean fat salaries. It's convenient how there's no money for wage increases for everyone else when there seems to be plenty for exec's salaries.

Do your homework before joining BLC. Some good jobs; some bad.

Pros

A faith based organization with over 100 years of history with outstanding direct service providers and beautiful people to support. In some locations, for some managers, this could be a dream job helping people. In other locations and departments, you could spend your time banging your head against the proverbial brick wall. Read all of these reviews. I've seen the good and the bad. Depending where you work and who you work for, any of these reviews might describe what you will get. My first 6 months, I'd give it 4 to 5 star rating. My last 6 months, maybe 1 or 2. It went from being one of the best places I worked to one of the worst.

Cons

Look at BLC's 1099 forms and public disclosures, the cash flow situation is rough. The regulatory and funding environment of this industry has changed; BLC did not know how to change with it and is now trying to fit a decade or 2 of transition into a couple of years. The current organization culture is a mixture of toxic micromanagement or good empowering management depending on your location and department and boss. There is a mixture of people willing to try new things and adopt best practices and others that do not want any form of change. !!!Be sure to talk to a number of staff members in the location or department you are considering taking a job with!!! Also, look closely at the benefits. If you come from a competitor in the field, they'll be comparable. If you come from a tech, manufacturing, or academic environment, they'll be poor. Note the retirement contributions have a vesting period and that there are no paid holidays. (I.e. if you want Christmas off, it will take a vacation day.) More than one person I know found this out AFTER they took the job because it was not explained clearly beforehand.

Pros

Unfortunately there aren't any. Most people I know throughout the organization are looking for new jobs.

Cons

CEO and COO have no idea what they are doing. Bethesda has its head in the sand and make decisions on the fly with no real strategic plan. They ignore federal regulations and plan based in their own personal preferences. Not to mention caring about what the people they support think. There is little to no respect for upper management. All talk and no follow through has disillusioned many staff.
