Some people do try and do their best in HR

Cons

HR has a toxic culture, all about managing up, hiding problems and lots of running around but doing very little.

Pros

Salaries for most are at least pretty fair to quite good. Some great people in the working levels of the business. Flexibility is generally supported (though in some teams this is under attack).

Cons

“Leadership” is almost non-existent. This is a command and control company. Managers manage through wielding of authority, and there is no understanding of the concept of providing vision and empowering staff to obtain better results and discretionary effort. Don’t come expecting any development. Unless you are one of the very few favourites, who might enjoy substantial investment, the vast majority have no investment. This is a company that doesn’t invest in people. It hires talent, and then bleeds them dry, putting them out to pasture or running them out of the business. Cronyism is the APA way. Nepotism is also evident. Management has become more autocratic and there are many examples of bullying and poor behaviours. Abuse, threats, and misuse of power is a daily occurrence. This behaviour is condoned and even encouraged by HR. There is old school management practices that are reminiscent of a time our grandparents would regale us with. This is a cold, mean and non-empathetic company. HR is now in bed with the defective managers, protecting toxic managers and are backing the deranged practices. Bullying is now evident even from HR. This has been a recent phenomena coinciding with a restructuring and rebranding to People, Safety and Culture. In stark contradiction to their new name, they are substantially less people oriented than that of even a year or two ago. Coaching and mentoring was a hallmark of HR and recent restructuring has turned them into “absent” work police only showing their faces to administer punishments and ill informed edicts. It’s a slow company, and the opposite of agile.

- Change adverse from the top down, uses ASX top 30 status as an excuse to not change - Has a culture of fear and intimidation orchestrated from all levels of leadership - Unsupportive and incompetent leaders and HR department - Known for protecting bullies, taking no action and covering up stress and bullying claims
