Pros

8th Light was a great place to learn and grow as a new engineer. I still recommend it whole-heartedly to junior engineers as a supportive environment to develop their skills and level up. During my time there, I had many amazing coworkers who created a welcoming environment and encouraged me to grow. I appreciated being in an environment that is supportive of conference travel and professional development, and especially thankful that 8th Light puts a lot of effort into planning company events that aren’t centered around drinking.

Cons

Unfortunately, 8th Light’s leadership team made a lot of pretty big mistakes during my time there that negatively impacted retention and morale. These mistakes included some poor hiring decisions, failure to hire and promote women into technical leadership positions, and a few poorly-led consulting projects that led to tense client relationships. These mistakes, in addition to strict billable hour requirements, mediocre pay, and a lack of designated sick time were some of the reasons I ultimately decided to move on.

Pros

Pros: • Joined the company because it promised the opportunity to work alongside some of the most talented software craftsmen in the industry. • The culture initially seemed geared towards encouraging creativity, personal development, and high-quality software engineering. • What better place to learn Agile or Clean Code than at its birthplace?

Cons

• Over the course of my tenure, it became evident that the company is pivoting away from its core focus on software craftsmanship. • Management seems more intent on transforming the company into a full-service business consultancy, à la McKinsey or Bain & Co., leading to a significant mismatch with the team's core competencies. • The push for "shift left" thinking has been confusing at best and seems to take precedence over actual engineering work. • Despite the company's claim to value open communication, my experience with management felt more like neglect dressed up as "trust and autonomy." • What's more concerning is the hostile work environment. I've been placed in situations with clients where I've felt undervalued, even mistreated. When I sought help, instead of guidance or support, I often felt even more isolated. On several occasions, my vulnerabilities were turned against me, with shared information being used out of context.

Pros

- Company gives you time to learn and grow (about 150 hours) - Budget to use on learning and development (now it's $1000) - Depending on client and team, can be amazing everyday work culture - Great place to start career with apprenticeship (although less and less cohorts have been starting )

Cons

- No bonuses. Only for executives and sales people. - Average yearly COL raise for meeting expectations (3-5%). Some people would consider this a con since there is no bonuses. - Unclear how well financially the company is doing. People are let go, then more are rehired at odd pace. - Expected to contribute to internal initiatives to meet expectations. Yet average COL raise and no bonuses.
