I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at n8n.io in Sept 2024
Interview
The call with the recruiter started with the introduction of the company and the product. Then it was followed by questions about me. There was little time left for my own questions.
Next, was the call with the designers to review my portfolio. I had rather little time to do it and then there was a short exercise. The exercise required a coding knowledge which was a total surprise to me. I don't think I have seen this in the role requirements to know how to code.

Question 1
Can you walk me through a process of how you solved some difficult/ complex problem?
How would you redesign this feature (the coding problem was presented)? Followed by the question asking me whether I know what the source input format should be
Hi there,
Thank you so much for your review and for your feedback. We agree that we could have been clearer about the expectations for how technical you would be required to be for the role. We will make this clearer in the future in our job descriptions!

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at n8n.io in May 2026
Interview
The process was very well thought out and smooth. I applied through Linkedin with no prior contact or references and received an initial reply on the same day. The whole process form initial contact to offer took about a month and through the whole thing the TA's communication was clear, and everything progressed fast. I was shared a document that explained the process and expectations clearly and it was written for this role in particular, even including why other candidates failed typically.
The first step after the screening was a quick design challenge (15min). Then there was a more detailed 1 hour challenge which included wireframing live. Then came the case study review and the culture fit. Having challenges before the portfolio interview is not typical but I think it worked really well to set expectations early on for both sides. Topics of both challenges were revealed on the call and not beforehand.
The whole process expects you to know the product and having used it. If you haven't done so before it's a bit of a time investment but also helps be on the same page in terms of expectations and mindset. It helps a lot that there's plenty of documentation and a free trial which they will extend during the process if needed.

Question 1
What kind of workflows have you built with n8n before and what was your impression on the tool?
Thank you for writing this up so thoughtfully. A same-day reply and a process document written specifically for the role, including the honest bit about where candidates typically struggle, is exactly the experience we want to create. It's good to know it landed that way.
Welcome to the team. Excited to have you here!
