Initial contact by HR recruiter, followed by 30 minute phone screen with manager and director, then half-a-day of interview sessions with staff, mostly other TPMs. The half day interview included a presentation from candidate (me) and a math/puzzle round. Based on the interview questions, seemed to me the TPM role at Zoox is more akin to admin coordinator. Collect status, filter and present to management who are the ones to make decisions. It left me wondering what they want a TPM to actually DO. (I’m used to TPM being responsible for scope, schedule, cost. If any of those are out of whack - particularly schedule - then the TPM is on the hook to explain and mitigate. Better yet, a TPM removes roadblocks before running into problems). I even asked the recruiter, who was a nice guy, if the role had any ownership responsibility? reply: TPMs have the ear of senior leadership. I gave a negative experience rating because role felt like an inflated title, like a bait and switch. Maybe this is why the TPM salary at Zoox is comparatively lower.
