Volcom Assistant Manager interview questions

The Process was not very clear. I applied and got a call from the DM, and called him back to set up an interview but when speaking to him, he seems to be unsure of when to set up an interview and said he would call back. The DM emailed after a day to set up an interview for next week and gave what day but never confirmed. I got a call from the store manager and got passed to the DM and then the store manager had asked to meet in person since interviews were over the phone. When I meet the store manager in-person it raised a red flag with a question that is unrelated to the job and seems to have been a deciding factor of getting passed over for the position. I had encouraged fellow employees at my current work to apply and one of them had gotten an interview with the DM but raised concern because the store manager had asked me if I was in a relationship with that employee. Being in retail for over 10 years and having conducted multiple interviews myself, that type of question should never be asked.
