      Motion Graphics Designer Interview

      20 Mar 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Vidsy

      Interview

I only interviewed with HR and it was a basic interview. Nice guy, pleasant conversation. It seems like they have a really great idea and a great platform. What makes this interview negative is that they gave me a project to work on. A pretty extensive one, a full IG story to complete. I could finish a project like this really quickly, I do this at my current job all the time, sometimes with a 6 hour turnover rate, so it was initially fine with me. I got assets and was free to do whatever as long as it followed the company branding on their site. The problem is, they want the after effects file. I initially agreed to do this, but then removed myself from continuing with the process. They're basically asking for a free AE template from job applicants that they could use for their clients. I would stay away. If it was only the mp4 they wanted, it's still too much to ask for a job applicant. A basic test is one thing, but I have a portfolio and resume for a reason. Asking for After Effects files isn't ok.

Thanks for your review. The task we use for our Motion Graphics role is used only to assess the suitability of candidates and has no other purpose. By using the task we're able to assess candidates on a level playing field when given the same assets and instructions to work with (something we can't do using a candidates portfolio alone), and we're not looking for a template at all, rather we realise that working in After Effects is much more than just the video output. Vidsy has an international, internal team of 10+ Motion Designers, and juggle After Effects files from a community of almost 10,000 Creators - each with their own ways of working - so we need to ensure our candidates know their way around After Effects like the back of their hand so they're ready for any challenge. Our Motion Designers collaborate on projects and we need to ensure that the files can be easily picked up and completed by any of the Team. Nobody wants to collaborate with Designers if their AE files are unorganised, badly named and full of pre-comps!

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Vidsy (London, England) in Jul 2017

      Interview

People from the Creative Team saw my work at an end of year show, emailed me saying I should apply for a new position online. I then had to respond to an example brief, which they liked and told me to come for an interview.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

When I was at the interview I asked questions about the role, the Vidsy platform and how Creators come into it. They asked me about various formats and how I solve problems but also how I’d grip viewers. Also, if I hadn’t of got the job I think I would’ve definitely signed up to the platform as a creator!
