Do not be fooled by any slickly worded ads - This job is a sales rep for Cutco knives. The ad I applied to said "Customer Service Representative" and the person who scheduled my "interview" said it was a call center.
The entire process was very strange. Not only was the ad misleading, but when I tried to call back the number the left on my voicemail, the first couple of times it went straight to an empty voicemail asking me to "leave my name and number." A respectable business will at least announce themselves in a voicemail. The third time I called, I did speak with someone who made a big show of having to schedule my interview asap, because they had spots filling up quickly. The only time he could give me was later that afternoon. It actually ended up being that the person who scheduled my interview over the phone, was the person I interviewed with... It was very odd that he talked about himself over the phone in third person.
When I got to the building to interview, it was in an upstairs suite. I only found it because he had hung a paper sign with the company name by a staircase with an arrow pointing up. He later joked about this sign, which was again odd.
When I entered the office, he came out of his back office and gave me an application to fill out with a pencil. He then went back into his office and sat and listened to rock music while I filled out the application. It was very unprofessional.
After I filled out the application, he took me back into his office and made a show at reviewing it, but not really asking any real questions. He then brought me back out to watch a presentation about the company.
The presentation took place in a small room with six chairs - obviously meant to be a group interview, so it was even more awkward being just him and I. This was also obviously the first time he had done a presentation. He showed a Powerpoint on the screen that he wasn't familiar with, because he was stumbling all over himself and didn't seem to know what was going on. He wasn't comfortable with the material because he kept breaking off into talking about how he had gone on all these great trips for Cutco and everyone was so awesome. He added in a lot of his sales presentation - showing me how he can cut a penny or a rope with the knives etc. I was annoyed with all the patronizing questions he kept asking his "audience" like "If I told you I could cut this penny with the scissors, would you believe me?" (Also, he had a difficult time cutting said penny...) I wouldn't even buy from this guy, let alone work for him.
When he tried to go into the second half of his presentation, where he presented me with yet another application to fill out, I stopped him and said that I didn't think this was for me.
