      Teacher Interview

      29 Dec 2017
      Anonymous employee
      Chiang Mai
      Accepted offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at VIPKid (Chiang Mai) in Nov 2017

      Interview

I will preface by saying I'm not a disgruntled wishful employee. I made it through the interview process and am a teacher for VipKid. Other than the application and interview process I really enjoy working for VipKid. I travel full time and it is a way to make reliable income when I am abroad so I love it for that. My reason for writing this is to warn anyone of this arduous process, that has been fraught with technical issues and poor support, and hopefully make it easier for everyone. Here is my experience. I first applied for VipKid 4 months ago. After getting the invitation to interview I recorded a demo. After which you are supposed to be contacted withing 36 hours. 3 or 4 days goes by and nothing, so I email them and am told they don't have a demo of me and I need to send them the video. This is impossible. You are never given a link it is supposed to automatically submit and you have no access. I said this and was told to just re-record. I then asked if I did something wrong and what I need to do to make sure it didn't happen again and received no response. I re-recorded and within about 2 hours received a email that I would not be accepted. This seemed very quick to get it reviewed so I emailed them asking. After 2 days I had never received a reply so I decided to use a different email and re-apply. I re-recorded and received an invite to do a mock class. Again, this is same account just different email. I never received confirmation but I believe there was a tech issue involving my missing video that was the catalyst for the email saying I wouldn't be considered, Anyways, I did the mock class and passed with a 45 out of 50. At this point you are given the option to do another mock class or do a new pathway where you do a 2 hour workshop. The consequences are not explained well at all for this and I would advise to NEVER do the workshop. I chose the workshop route. On the chance you fail the 2nd mock you have to reapply again and start over. My thought was it's safer and the workshop will be good to ask questions of an experienced teacher. So If you pass your second mock you can go straight into teaching major courses(where all the booking are). If you do the workshop you have to start by doing 5 trial classes, which are way less common and are often cancelled. These are the free classes VipKid gives to parents thinking about using the service. It took me 2 weeks to get my 5 trial classes finished. After which I was waiting for notification that I could teach major courses and actually start working and making money. After 4 days I decided to email them and was then told I would be contacted shortly. A week after completing my 5th trial I finally received my invite. Finally this had all paid off...Nope. In the email was instructions to do yet another workshop after which I you have to take a multiple choice quiz and then do ANOTHER demo. This is literally like the 7th demo I've had to record because of all the tech issues. The link to schedule the interview was broken so every month said there were no workshops that month, so I had to contact support yet again. After all this I was finally able to teach major courses. To get to that pont it took over 2 months from beginning to end and was a stressful nightmare. Again, I am not trying to dissuade anyone from teaching with VipKid just be aware that this is a very long process. Admittedly, mine was much longer than friends who teach for them but even then you are looking at 3 weeks to a month. The interviews themselves aren't difficult if you know how to teach it's just all the hoops you have to jump through. Hopefully they get this sorted out for future applicants

      Question 1

The interviews consist of demo lessons to imaginary students and mock classes with a VipKid teacher who is acting.

just a quick demo lesson following the course materials, then a few logistical questions and talk about the program. Was quite quick and easy overall if you have teaching experience..

Pretty simple! There was a live and recorded portion where you "teach" a sample class. My interviewer was nice and helpful. Make sure your internet is good and use a wired connection

Easy and straight forward interview process. There is a demo teaching section. This was a while ago so it may have changed. The onboarding process was also easy. Again, this was a while ago, so it may have changed.
