      Online English Teacher Interview

      26 Jun 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Bijing
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at VIPKid (Bijing) in Jun 2017

      Interview

      1. Brief screening interview. They send you a slide show in advance. You prepare and teach to the interviewer who pretends to be a young child with very limited English. 2. Preparation--you review a ton of material independently and take a quiz. 90% of the information I had to review was not necessary for the quiz. According to their estimates, this process takes around 7 hours and you have 2 days to do it. 3. Mock 1--You get a slide show in advance for a full level 1 lesson. You introduce yourself. During the mock teaching portion your "mentor" pretends to be a 5 yr old with very limited English. My "mentor" pretend to be a child who did not know how to use a mouse. I remained calm and stepped off screen for a second to get a mouse to show them. She complimented me for my calm problem solving, but I think I lost points for going off the screen. About half way through we stopped and she gave me feedback. I finished the lesson and she gave me more feedback. I felt like the feedback was very helpful, and I applied it to my Mock 2 class. 4. Mock 2--You are sent two partial lessons. One for a 5 yr old with very limited English and one for an 8 yr old level 3 student. I implemented many of the suggestions I got from my Mock 1 "mentor." I went through the warm-up slides quickly to help with pacing. I moved my white board to a place where there wasn't glare. I messed around with lighting for over an hour. I didn't want to buy anything for a job I didn't have yet. My Mock 2 "mentor" was pretty difficult to please. I was criticized for pretty much everything. She said I didn't have enough props (I had used a white board, flash cards, bells, a stuffed animal, and a couple picture magnets in 7 minutes for the first class; for the more advanced class I had 2 flags and 2 maps I had printed out). She said she couldn't see my white board very well (which is fine, but I explained why I had it where I did, and she didn't seem to care. How was I supposed to know it wasn't adequate? It looked ok on the screen from my end, and I was trying to solve the problem of the glare my 1st mentor mentioned. I felt like I was expected to have it all figured out when this is clearly a trial and error process!) She said I didn't do the ear cupping "enough." She said I used too much incidental language on one slide (it was a slide for the level 3 student, and based on the things she had said as the student, her English was pretty good, so I wasn't particularly worried about a little incidental language.) She said I didn't use all of the "target sentences." (There was an enormous list of target sentences, so I decided to pick and choose especially since the slides I'd been given were obviously only part of the lesson.) I know the company is very particular about timing, so when I was running out of time at the end I skipped the last slide (which had been suggested somewhere, not sure where). Anyway, she didn't like that. I got a response a day later that I had been unsuccessful and they were deactivating my account. They sent me a survey to take because "they are trying to improve their application process." I took it as an opportunity to get out all my frustration after spending about 20 hours of time on this whole mess and not being offered a job I'm over-qualified for. I decided it was for the best, and looked into other companies that seemed less cult-like. Then this morning, (I got my rejection notice on Friday, this is Monday.) I got several emails congratulating me on passing my Mock class and asking me to submit the required forms so I could begin teaching. There was absolutely no acknowledgement of the previous email I'd received telling me I'd been unsuccessful. I went back to the teacher portal which had previously said I had been unsuccessful, and now it is inviting me to complete the process by submitting forms and signing a contract. I am completely confused. I was offered an interview with DaDaABC in the mean time. I'm not going to rule out accepting the position at this point, but I'm certainly not considering it a long-term move at this point. They seem incredibly disorganized.

Interview process was relatively fun and easy if you're comfortable doing part of a mock teaching lesson. They may do it differently now, but that's what I had to do when I interviewed.
