      ESL Teacher Interview

      12 Mar 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Atlanta, GA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at VIPKid (Atlanta, GA) in Mar 2017

      Interview

The first interview is very short. You speak with a person in China about your background and do a 10 minute demo class. I have a friend who works for the company so she helped me prepare. After my mock lesson, the guy told me that he had no feedback because my lesson was perfect. Your pay is set during this interview based on a point system. I have taught for 16 years, two of them ESL. I only got 20/25 points for teaching experience. I feel like they don't give anyone a 100% so they can start them at a lower pay. At this point they tell you that you have the job and send you a contract. They said I would have to do one or two mock classes. I did my first mock class and everything went great. The woman (in Toronto) told me that she had never seen someone so prepared. I went out and bought plastic animals and a stuffed panda for the lesson on P. Since they had already given me a contract, I assumed that meant I had the job. I thought I was doing the mock classes to prepare for the actual teaching. After my mock class, the teacher said she loved my energy and that she actually had fun in my lesson. She said I was going to be a great teacher. She gave me a couple small things to work on... watch my timing and practice letter sounds. I did both of these things and then moved on to the second mock interview. From the beginning, the trainer put me on edge. She asked if I had any questions before we started and I told her no that I had watched a lot of Youtube videos and thought I was prepared. She mocked me for watching videos from YouTube. Before I even started teaching, she made me feel very uncomfortable. I went through my lesson and apparently, there was a lag from my end. She called the fireman (the tech people). She asked if I could hardwire and I told her that I would be in the middle of my living room and it wouldn't be very professional. I told her that I could permanently move my router upstairs for when the lessons started. She asked if I wanted to reschedule my mock 2 class since the connection was bad. I asked if she thought that was what I should do and she said, "No, I think that the lesson is going ok. Let's just finish it out." I got done and she said I should have explained what the word "Cloth" meant but other than that her feedback was ok. Next thing I know, I get a denial email. I now spent all this money for props and I have no job. I don't understand why they give you a contract and tell you that you are hired if you are not actually hired until after that mock classes. This does not make any sense to me. Also, how could 2/3 interviewers give me extremely positive feedback but because the third lady didn't like me, I don't get hired? It was a sad and confusing process!
