I was put through a multitude of background investigations, security interviews, and polygraph exams. Also personal finance investigations. Your physical fitness, height and weight are also tested. About 30% of Americans are ever eligible to serve in the US Military.
I applied in-person. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at US Navy (Cherry Hill, NJ)
Interview
A few sit-down chats, questions relating to criminal history and drug use, then a physical. For the background investigations they typically covered topics relating to loyalty and if there was anything in your past that someone could use to blackmail you.

Talked to a Navy Recruiter, do the paperwork, go to MEPS pick a job.... (research the job you want prior to going to MEPS) KNOW what you want and stick to what you want! .... then go to boot camp.
