I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at US Army (Cambridge, MA) in Jun 2009
Interview
Recruitment is straight forward. If you are a US Citizen, no criminal background and at least a GED, you get the job. One caveat, there is a placement exam called the ASVAP. If you score well on this, your job opportunities are almost endless, if you do not, well, they become very limited.

I applied in-person. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at US Army (Chicago, IL) in Mar 2011
Interview
Simply had to take the civil servants exam and pass the background, drug and psych test. Overall it was not very complicated or time consuming. There was a physical exam involved as well but if you are physically fit and have no prior criminal or background issues and have a high school diploma, you would be a good candidate.
