Intermediate Software Engineer – Artificial Intelligence Interview

      21 May 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Ottawa, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Tucows (Ottawa, ON) in May 2026

      Interview

The interview process felt uncomfortable and unnecessarily adversarial. Instead of feeling like a professional conversation about my experience, technical background, and fit for the role, it felt more like an interrogation. The tone did not create a respectful or balanced environment for a candidate. I expected a structured discussion about the role, engineering expectations, AI-related work, and team fit, but the process left me with a negative impression of the company’s hiring culture. Communicating the technical tradeoffs is interpreted as pushback against a requirement of the role. Extremely unprofessional, I would suggest that you do not interview with them.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

What do you know about Tucows and our businesses? What attracted you? What interests you about this job? What do you bring to this role that you would make you a good fit? Walk me through your resume (uncover responsibilities, accomplishments, reasons for moves) Highlight projects where you've used Python or another OOL (C# or Go). What was the goal of the project, and what part did you build or contribute to? Have you worked with any AI-specific Python libraries like PyTorch, Torch, or Accelerator? What did you use them for? Were you building models, fine-tuning them, or using pre-trained ones? Tell me about your API development experience. Have you ever built or used an API in your projects? Can you give me an example of how you integrated or called an API? Follow-up: What tools or methods did you use to test or document the API? Have you worked with TensorFlow? If so, can you describe how you used it—such as building, training, or deploying models? Have you used any cloud platforms or services like AWS, GCP, or Azure in your work or projects? Follow-up: What were you doing in the cloud—running applications, storing data, or deploying models? What type of SQL databases have you worked with? Size of databases? Give me an example of a time you had to explain a technical topic to someone without a technical background. How did you make sure they understood? Have you lead any projects with non-technical teams? Microservice architecture experience? Worked with MQ or event driven systems? Where would you like to be in the next few years? How can a new employer support that? Why are you looking to leave your current employer? Why are you looking to leave your current employer? (context) When would you be available to start with Tucows? Are you currently in the midst of any other interviews, or expecting any other offers to come your way at this time? This role is hybrid, do you have the ability to come to the Liberty Village office 3 days a week? What compensation goals do you have coming into a position like this one? (Salary, benefits, vacation, other) Verify work authorization (review they are eligible in the jurisdictions this role can be based out of). Any additional questions for me?
