Interview was years ago, setup with a recruiter. I dressed appropriately and showed up early, interviewer was an older man from the technology department who was on time. They took me back for a technical interview, I was able to answer all of their questions correctly, when being asked about ports the interviewer even noted that no one else had gotten those specific questions correct yet of those they had interviewed so far but also said to me "But that doesn't mean you got the job." I would assume that would be a given and I agreed with him that I understood that. Throughout the interview process he would occasionally throw a "but that doesn't mean you got the job." at me which the more he did it, the more i figured they already had someone for the position in mind and this was just something they had to do. I did throw some jokes back at him and he told me the team had dungeons and dragons nights sometimes and I told him I also played with a group on my own so I would have that in common with his team members. Mind you, the tech team when he introduced me to them was all men, which is not uncommon and I thought nothing of it at first as everyone seemed really nice. The only person I thought was odd was the interviewer constantly reminding me just because things were going well that didn't mean I had the job even though I had said nothing to indicate I thought that and kept agreeing with him that of course it didn't, because that's how interviews work? Anyways, I get told I would hear back soon, I talked with the recruiter from my car afterwards and she asked me how it went and I told her it went well. A few weeks later I hear nothing back and reach out to her, she said they had chosen to go with a different person. I asked if they had any feedback they could provide as I knew i did well on the technical questions, and what she told me was hilarious. She told me that he, the interviewer and i believe the head of this department had told her I was too professional. Mind you, the tech department and all others from what I could tell at the time I was there all just about worse suits minus a jacket. I was not overdressed, I was not overly professional as they claimed, and ontop of that I even made an effort to pickup on his sense of humour and jest with him. And then it suddenly made sense why he had been telling me from the beginning of the interview that just because I was doing well or things were going well didn't mean I got the job, because who points that out or says that anyways? It was really odd. And then it made sense, the tech team at the time was entirely male and I am pretty sure that's why I didn't get the job which is fine, I actually landed a great job weeks later I am still at currently with a more diverse team and have moved up in terms of positions. Just a warning if you are a woman applying for a tech position in this company, you will like myself be their diversity interviewee I suppose so they can say they tried to interview a diversity hire but that they just didn't know their stuff or whatever excuse they give. Honestly if they had given a different reason I would have thought nothing of it, but saying it was because I was "too professional" is the funniest excuse I've been given to say "we didn't hire you because we don't want a woman on the tech team" and I have been turned away from other tech companies before who did not want a woman on the team.
