      Site Reliability Engineer Interview

      21 Jun 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Thought Machine (London, England) in May 2019

      Interview

The first part of the interview was great. Meet the team, meet other candidates for the same and different roles all in a social setting with a beer. All that went well and I was selected to move onto the technical test..... Overall it would have been a positive experience, but soured somewhat when the SRE role became a Developer role 2 days after working for them for free.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The technical test was, within the next 48 hours write a python script that can retrieve, process and display information from a micro service that was provided.

Thank you for your feedback. When hiring for SREs, we look for engineers who have both operational and programming skills. Our SREs work closely with the engineering team, where a solid foundation in software development is required. We appreciate your time and interest in Thought Machine.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Thought Machine (London, England) in Jul 2021

      Interview

I applied online process took a week. First round was discussion with HR about the role , company , culture etc. second round was take home technical task. Before that technical task they invited to join the call with VP who was talking about company product revenues and technology. The technical task was average it was python script to fetch data from endpoints. Python is not my 1st language but still I managed to complete the task and submitted. I got feedback from them which was helpful If I am going for developer role , they judged me on the basis of programming skills where the given task task was not related to job role as well. anyway they are confused about the job role I guess they need a python developer rather than SRE or Devops.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Fetch data from different endpoints(microservices) and print them on console.

Hello and thanks for taking the time to complete our challenge. SREs at Thought Machine work on both operational and development projects to automate our infrastructure deployments. Software development is a key aspect in this role, and the main reason we ask that candidates complete our coding challenge, to ensure there is depth in software development. Operational skills are tested during the on-site interviews. We do hope you choose to interview with Thought Machine again in the future.
