Informal informational interview conducted virtually, very casual and low stakes. Interviewer asked questions related to my experience/education. Asked about my knowledge of publication. Did not test my knowledge of current events.

How familiar are you with the magazine? Which writers do you read in the magazine?
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at The New Yorker (New York, NY) in Feb 2022
Interview
First, a 45-minute phone screen - a lot of questions about where I get my news, how I identify whether a source/outlet is reliable or not, what my intellectual curiosities are, etc. Then, a second 45-minute in person interview with another team member, with similar types of questions but maybe slightly more intricate. How would you verify conflicting information from different sources, why is fact-checking needed in different types of writing, etc. They didn't necessarily want someone with a journalism background, more someone with diverse intellectual interests. That said, having extensive experience in journalism/media (which I didn't) would have equipped me with better answers to the questions. I didn't hear from them for 2 weeks; once i followed up, I was informed that they were moving forward with another candidate.
