I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Tesco (Cupar, Scotland) in Mar 2017
Interview
I applied online for the position of customer assistant at a nearby Tesco and within two weeks I got a phone call from a manager inviting me to attend an interview. This was a relaxed and fairly easy two part process. The first part consisted of answering questions, filling in health and safety forms and giving my availability (including any booked holidays). Then I had to do a work sample on the shop floor, packing customer's bags to see how I interacted with customers and staff.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Tell us about:
- a time you helped or supported someone
- a time you had to change or adapt your behaviour
- a time you had to work under pressure
(Did you learn anything from it?)
- an example of a time you had to follow rules and procedures
(What would be your attitudes towards challenging authority?)
The work sample, packing bags, was nice and easy as the shop wasn't too busy. I think they were basically looking to see how friendly I was (without being too intrusive or over-the-top), how efficiently I worked and how I interacted with other staff members.
I prepared answers to all the questions I could find available here on Glassdoor, with examples from my previous customer service roles using the STAR technique. I would highly recommend doing the same; I typed up answers the day before, emailed them to myself and read over them before the interview.
In case you are wondering (it isn't that easy to find reliable, up-to-date information on it online as there is a lot of conflicting information) I was told at the interview that it is £7.20 for the first three months, going up to £7.62 after. This is for a part time, day time position outside of London.
Interview was around 2.5 hours in total. Started with a group interview then 20 minutes on the shop floor shadowing a checkout colleague then finally a 1 to 1 interview with a manager.
Nice environment. Kind people. Asked the right questions and I felt I could ask any questions i had. Overall I enjoyed the experience and would recommend to other people to do an interview with them.
Very easy, just asked a few questions about my experience and my availability on time etc. what days i can work and my flexability on the dates i can do
