The interview was pleasant, conducted by the principal, assistant principal, and a young teacher, for whom the person hired would be in a junior position, i.e. the current teacher was teaching upper division Latin (high school), whereas the person to be hired would teach 7th and 8th graders. The current teacher only had two years of undergraduate Latin, which hardly qualifies her to teach those levels, or to prepare the students for Advanced Placement tests in Latin. I was told successful candidates would be called in for a second interview, and opportunity to teach. I was disappointed not to be chosen. I have a master's degree in Classics (Latin & Greek), and advanced study toward the Ph.D. The current teacher is a graduate of this high school, and clearly a favorite. A review of all the teachers' websites revealed that they are all young--my guess would be the oldest was mid-thirties, with most being in their 20s. It is my belief there is a clear and institutionalized bias at this school against older applicants such as myself. Forewarned is forearmed--don't waste your time applying here if you're over 50.
