      Research Associate Interview

      9 Aug 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      South San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Standard BioTools (South San Francisco, CA)

      Interview

I was contacted through linkedin via HR. I did a phone screening with a scientist that lasted about 20 minutes. Mainly he told me about the company's products and what projects he's working on. He then asked about my experience. Ten minutes after our conversation was over HR contacted me and invited me for an onsite interview. The location of the company is great, however, immediately walking in the lobby I just didn't get good vibes. There was a lack of professionalism for the bigger company that it was. The scientist greeted me and moved me to a meeting room. He handed me a paper that showed who I would be meeting with. This is where I noticed the job title was "temporary" which they failed to inform me beforehand. After that, I wasn't really interested in being there anymore. The questions were pretty straightforward about NGS and library prep. The head scientist asked lots of technical questions, I forgot how I did one of them. There was a lot of waiting and down time between meeting each person. After the interview they showed me around lab. Nothing looked organized. I also noticed that 80% of people I saw that day were asian, so the company lacked diversity. I never heard back as to how my interview went, and I don't really care about it either. I don't recommend working here if you want to be happy!

      Anonymous employee
      South San Francisco, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Standard BioTools (South San Francisco, CA)

      Interview

30-minute interview with the hiring manager (Senior Scientist) and a co-worker. Mostly behavioral questions along with some questions to gauge my interest in microfluidics and single-cell genomics. Followed by a 30-minute interview with the group leader. Most questions were technical. This was followed by a 15-minute chat with an HR person which was more informal. About 10 days after the on-site interview I had a phone interview with another Senior Scientist who worked closely with the hiring manager. Very standard questions were asked, mostly about my technical background.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Can you give me a description of how qPCR works? Do you have experience in troubleshooting in the lab? Where do you see yourself career-wise 5 years from now?
