I applied online. I interviewed at Smile.io in Dec 2019
Interview
This was definitively the strangest phone screen I ever had: instead of offering to explain the company and the product, it went the other way around.
Initial phone screen was going fine, just like any other phone screen for a software engineering position, until the HR interviewer decided to finish the interview "for now" because I hadn't learned enough about the company. I was supposed to research things (what things?) about the company and re-schedule the call "after I got to know more about the company".
The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Smile.io
Interview
As you already know, you must be "Humble, Hungry and Humane", while the company representative's behavior is very far away from the reasonable principles they are pretending to be following.
After two and a half weeks on intense tests, calls, and conversations in Slack I was left in silence, even, I was told that I completed the codding challenges very well and how happy they are to see my implementations. Smile.io just disappeared and was not responding to my emails.
I would suggest applying and judge by your own experience, however, mine was dissatisfying.

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Smile.io (Kitchener, ON) in Sept 2019
Interview
My first interview with their HR recruiter made me give up applying for a position at Smile.io.
The beginning of the conversation went well, but then it took a weird turn when she requested me to describe to her reasons why I thought Smile.io was so great, awesome and why I'd want to work there so much while giving me a bleak picture of the company or what it does. Without the said accolades, she recommended that I went back and thought of ways I could praise the company, I withdrew my name from consideration right away concluding that Smile.io would def not be a good fit for me.
Thank you for providing your feedback to us - it's super valuable to learn from experiences that could have gone better! We definitely aim to offer a more enjoyable experience than it seems you encountered with our interview process and we will use your thoughts to improve.
We normally do ask candidates why they are interested in Smile so that we can understand what motivates and excites them. That intent must have been unclear during this conversation and for that we apologize!
