      Data Scientist Interview

      27 Nov 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Skillz (San Francisco, CA) in Nov 2018

      Interview

The worst interview experience I have ever had. The company showed no respect for the applicant's time. If you are going through the same recruiting process as described below for the first round, do not waste your time for the onsite. First Round was an HR round, the manager of "data science" team called me, without letting me introduce my background or talk about any of my past project experience, then she talked about some of the problems that the company is trying to solve, and decide to move me forward for an onsite interview, no technical questions until this point. Then for the onsite interview, I was given two SQL questions and one Python question, (surprisingly, no stats, prob or ML questions for a "Data Scientist" position, hopefully, this gives you an idea about what the team is like as the time this review is written ). The SQL question was pretty clear and you just need to figure out the relationship between the tables and do some aggregation for the metrics they are looking for. I did not have time to complete both questions in SQL, but they said I did well on this round, and I was able to move forward(Yes, if you fail on some round in the onsite interview, you will not be able to move forward for the next round, and you need to leave). For the python question, it is the same question from the other glassdoor review, and I had the same problem, it was unclear about what the interviewer is looking for, after going through my solution, my work was taken away for "grading". Then I was told that I failed this round and need to leave. There really is no point to let the applicants go for an onsite and work on the technical interviews that could easily be done by sending a take-home challenge or a time-limited online assessment instead of wasting the valuable time for the applicants. Hopefully, the data science team and the recruiting team of the company will learn to respect the future applicants and improve the horrible interview process.

      Data Scientist Interview

      Anonymous interview candidate

      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Skillz

      Interview

Applied online and spoke with the recruiter. Then interviewed with the hiring manager. Hiring manager then set me up for 4hr long assignment on Hacker rank. The Hackerrank assignment is essentially you give them your ideas and code! Even the question is incomplete indicating the in house Data Science quality. The data science dept is sold out especially if you are experienced - look elsewhere! When they say the assignment is 4hr long, that is enough to indicate their motive.

      Data Scientist Interview

      14 Sept 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Skillz in Jan 2021

      Interview

Hiring manager reached out via email and then we setup call. Then spoke to HR about benefits etc. First interview was 4 hr long hackerrank assessment. A model building exercise, simple and straightforward. Then the HR scheduled 4 interviews 2 technical 1 with team and 1 with Hiring manager. 1st interview - python assessment! Gave me a sample data frame, gave a problem statement and asked me to code up some equation. The interviewer was hinting me in the right direction and specifically said me I can google anything I want! That round went well 2nd interview was on discussing data science assessment and open discussion around a hypothetical case study! It was pretty good too 3 days before next interview recruiter called me saying they are not moving ahead and will be cancelling other scheduled calls! I wasn’t told these were eliminating rounds! Also the recruited said me they wanted someone with strong python skills! I stumbled in the first interview on one simple thing so I chose to google it! In my opinion that was something the interviewer caught up and possibly rejected me stating they need someone strong in python. In my opinion you can’t be ‘open to google’ and reject someone for googling something simple at the same time! Anyway not my loss ! Saved myself two hrs ! Hope you find it helpful

      Interview

Recruiter reached out. Had a chat with a recruiter and one manager and was scheduled for an onsite. My feeling is that this one of those companies trying to hire Data Scientists because everyone else is hiring Data Scientists. This should tell you all you need to know
