      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON) in Nov 2020

      Interview

This was quite a unique and intensive application/interview process. I'll break it down into the three main pieces: 1. Initial application - I applied online off of Shopify's careers page. I spent a solid two full days working on the application and figuring our how to create a store using the free trial. My best advice here is to put the effort into building a store (even though they tell you it's optional) and really focus on the couple of questions they ask you to answer. Make sure your writing skills and grammar are top notch when filling out your answers. Show some personality where you can. I received an email inviting me to move on to the next stage about 3 days after submitting my initial application. 2. Google meets interview (20 - 30 mins) - I was able to select the time and day for my next interview. I picked a time about five days later. This interview is with a recruiter and is meant to be casual even though it is still nerve wracking! Mine lasted about 15 minutes. To prepare for this one, I thought about my work experiences, what lead me there, the common themes throughout my various jobs, how I grew within these roles. It was a fairly organic conversation. We started with a bit of chit chat and then got into the interview. Honestly, the chit chat might be just as important. Ask the interviewer a couple of questions about the weather or about their day before getting into the nitty gritty. To get things rolling, I was asked to pick a customer service job that I worked and talk about it. From there the interviewer asked questions related to what I was telling them. Really focus on any customer service or client service work you have done. Be yourself; this is your chance to let them see what kind of person you are. You don't need to impress them with your achievements or qualifications for this part. In fact, they don't want you to. Just impress them with you and your awesome personality. The interviewer was kind without being too bubbly. They were straightforward and gave clear instructions and explanations about what would happen next. A few hours later i received an invitation to the next interviewing stage - the Gauntlet. 3. I picked a interview time about a week and a half later to give me plenty of time to prepare. I read dozens and dozen reviews for the Gauntlet. While it really helped me prepare of for the interview, it also completely psyched me out and made my nerves get the best of me. The interview was all role play; 15 minute of chat support followed by a 10 minute phone support call. I did a ton of prep. Built a new store, read every review on here, wrote out dozens of step by step answers to questions I thought they might ask. I felt ready, but I have NEVER been more nervous. I totally blew it on the chat portion. I wasn't able to give solutions to either'merchant'. Time moved so quickly. It felt like it was over in minutes. It was terrible. I took too much time engaging the merchants, but it's also definitely a piece they are looking for. The phone part was better. They asked a question that I was completely prepared for. I even had notes written out for it right in front of me. The interviewer was really nice and honest and clear. They give feedback after each part. I HIGHLY suggest you identify where you think you went wrong and what you would do differently when debriefing with your interviewer. A few hours later I was asked to submit my references and three days later I was offered the position (shockingly) over the phone. Overall it was a very good experience. I had very few questions to ask as the process was crystal clear and so well organized. I put a whole lot of work into it. That being said, I can understand the some of the salty reviews on here about the interview process. I think I would have felt pretty crappy too if I didn't get the job after losing several weeks of my life in preparation for all the steps. The reviews on here make the Gauntlet seem very intimidating and it definitely is. But I messed it up and still got the job, so don't believe everything you read. If you're not techy (like me), let your people skills shine through and you'll be just fine.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

1st interview - Why Shopify? What did a typical day at your last job look like? What are your hobbies? What were your relationships like with customers and coworkers? What are you going to do with the rest of your day? 2nd interview - How do I set up free local shipping (chat)? How do I add a contact page to my main menu (chat)? How do I close my store (phone)?

Hi, there! Thank you so much for posting about your experience here! This is a great breakdown of the process, so thank you for taking the time to share this with others. Building a store is a great way to get an in-depth feel of the platform. It is not a required step, but it can be really useful to you through the progression of your application. Job interviews can be stressful for a number of reasons, but we try to break this process up into several stages to reduce as many barriers as possible between you and beginning a career at Shopify. So there is no need to be nervous! For the Life Story stage, this really is a chance for you to tell us about your life so far. We want this part to be a genuine conversation, it's the best way to get to know who you are and what drives you! It's important for us to find someone who is passionate about helping people because the products we build are critical to our merchants’ livelihoods and the success of their businesses. Building the best products is only possible by relentlessly working to understand their struggles, caring deeply, and being committed to helping them succeed every step of the way. The best way to learn more about our merchants is to have genuine conversations with them - this is where your personality can shine through! When a merchant reaches out to us for support, they will then know they are speaking to a real person who will do all they can to help. You're right in saying we don't need to be wowed by your past achievements - we just need to know you're someone who cares about making commerce better for everyone as much as we do! Our Technical Interview is essentially a role-play of what your daily workflow would be like in the Support Advisor role. You will be asked a variety of different questions by our merchants, no two days are the same. It's totally understandable that you felt nervous here, the technical interview can feel like a high-pressure situation! Getting solutions is an important part of the role - but we are also interested in *how* you get the solutions. Did the merchant feel heard, understood, and supported along the way? Did you chat with them to let them know their issue is safe in your hands? These are things we look for as well as technical accuracy. Thank you again for sharing your journey with us, I’m glad to see you’ve accepted our offer and I wish you the best for your future here at Shopify!

      Question 1

Las preguntas suelen ser sobre el propio producto, por lo que es buena idea hacerse una tienda en la plataforma unos días antes para saber cómo funciona.
