      Merchant Success Manager Interview

      23 Dec 2020
      Anonymous employee
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Shopify in Dec 2020

      Interview

I thoroughly enjoyed the interview process with Shopify. I applied online through the careers section of the website and really took my time with the open response questions. I was contacted within the week to book my first 15-20 phone interview. I was asked a few questions about why I was interested in Shopify and to give an example of a recent challenge I overcame in my role (*hint follow the STAR model-- situation, task, action, results ;)). I was contacted within a week after that to schedule my life story interview. My interviewer was incredibly thoughtful, patient, and very interested in hearing my unique background. I was prompted to start from high school, though I took my life story back even further to talk about the example my parents set for me, childhood, teenage years, high school, college, and post-grad and weaved a lot of the a-ha moments together that I feel shaped the person I am today. I felt very relaxed, heard, and seen. Within about 2 weeks after this, I was asked to schedule my final interview: 2 back-to-back interviews with the Team Leads (the managerial position for which the position I'm applying for would report to). We went through situational questions and a deep dive of my resume, finding where my experience and values align with the company, mission, and position. There were a few questions that were a bit left field that I was unprepared for and did my best to show them my thought process, though was honest about where my knowledge of the industry/role fell short. I think I recovered pretty well, and would rate my confidence at an 8/10 after that interview. 2 weeks later, I was invited back to do another round of the final interview with different Team Leads. I studied very hard for this one and did my fair share of research on the questions/topics I fell a bit short of the first time around. The final, final interview went super well, it felt more casual, and about a week later, I received a phone call notifying me of a verbal offer, final offer pending conversations with my references :) Overall super pleased with the experience, I felt it was very fair, thorough, and holistic. I could feel the strong employee-centric culture this organization has, and that was really important to me in my job search.

      Question 1

What would you do if the entire Shopify system just went down due to technical difficulties and one of your accounts just had a big influencer post about their product on social media moments before and are now super upset?

Hey, There! Thank you for sharing. It’s heartening to hear that you had a good time in your interview with Shopify! We are so happy to see that you have accepted an offer - it will be great seeing you grow in your new role. The interview process is designed to be conversational. We want candidates to feel comfortable and at-ease while in the interview environment. It’s important for us to learn about your passions, what drives you, and how our values can align together. We want conversations to be open-ended so we can ask questions about you and you can ask questions about Shopify in return. It’s important that you’re a constant learner so that we can teach one another, share context, mistakes and learnings. It sounds like you were the right fit for the role! Again, thank you for sharing and best of luck in your new position.

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Shopify in May 2024

      Interview

Unlike any process I’ve had in my nearly 2 decades of experience. I was referred in and then sent to a recruiter who didn’t offer any advice on what to expect. She brought up compensation and only told me OTE. I always exceed my rev targets so I knew that wouldn’t be a problem but having been laid off, I wanted to know my base salary so I scheduled a 10 min meeting with her to get that info. She was condescending and acted like I didn’t listen the first time by saying “[My name] if you remember we discussed the OTE last time.” Totally gaslit me. I loved the people I spoke with though. They’re kind and funny and make the interviews conversational. I would’ve crushed this job but I think that simply because I only had a couple years of ecomm experience (even though I studied it like I was back in college for this), I wasn’t selected. Don’t listen to the “life story” advice. Just make sure you can connect the dots on your resume. Keep answers succinct & impactful because they have a huge candidate pool. This job is an 80/20 split, so the base pay (I assume) is pretty low and you have to sell to hit the 20% delta - which is a given these days, anyway. Love the company and the mission and bummed I didn’t get it but just had a bad taste in my mouth from the recruiter being hasty with me.

      Interview

I had a great interview process. Kind people, responsive recruiter, straightforward interview process! No overly complicated or trick questions, which I really appreciated. Definitely prepare for the most common questions (tell me about a time...) and have anecdotes ready for typical MSM/CSM questions.
