      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Sept 2017

      Interview

Just as with the initial application (i.e., designing your own Shopify store, recording an introduction video), the interview process is long and thorough. Within three days of my application being sent in, I was contacted by a recruiter to book my first interview, the Life Story. This was a completely unstructured half-hour conversation and unlike a conventional interview -- you are the one leading the dialogue and it isn't limited to just your professional life! I personally began my story in reverse chronological order because I felt that provided me with the "most relevant" background for the job, but as we continued I was asked to delve into my hobbies as well as whether there were any highlights from my high school times and early life. Following that I was asked to book a 2-hour slot for the Gauntlet, which is the "real meat" of the interview process and consists of scenarios where you act as if you are a guru helping out a customer. I booked my Gauntlet to be exactly one week following my Life Story so that I had sufficient time to prepare, although there were slots available as early as two days later. The actual format of the Gauntlet was as such: a short Skype video call with the person (a current guru) running the Gauntlet, two phone calls made to your actual number (NOT via Skype), a live chat session via a widget installed on your Spotify store, and two emails. Between each phone call and email, I was given written feedback over Skype to be implemented for the second round. During the live chat session, I was simultaneously asked to also communicate via Skype chat (the guru roleplayed a team member that was also asking questions). You're also expected to resolve each scenario in a certain timeframe: for calls, this was 8 minutes; for the live chat, 15 minutes; and for emails, 10 minutes for the first draft and 7 minutes for the second draft. Within 24 hours, I was contacted by my recruiter for references and to book a 30-minute slot for the final stage, the Squad Lead Chat. I booked my slot for the earliest available time which was three days later. Unfortunately I was never called despite emailing my recruiter 10 minutes after my appointment start time to ask what was happening. He replied an hour and a half later saying that apparently my squad lead had called in sick for the day, which was really disappointing because I had fallen through the cracks and had to reschedule and wait another three days. However the chat itself was a breeze compared to the Gauntlet -- I was asked a few questions such as what my favourite part was and what I found most challenging -- and the majority of it was spent being informed about the position's duties, key performance indicators and other metrics, and the company and culture. I was called by my recruiter within 24 hours of the chat and given a verbal offer followed shortly by a written offer.

The interview process was pretty intense. They asked me about my life story, but I’d also created a store before that. Then I had to do a technical interview where I pretended I already had the job.

The interview experience was professional, friendly and organized. Interviewee did notify via email whether I got the offer or not. Great to hear back the results since typically companies don't.
