      Staff Engineer Interview

      13 Mar 2020
      Anonymous employee
      San Diego, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shield AI (San Diego, CA) in Jul 2019

      Interview

Phone interview with HR, then a more technical phone interview with hiring manager (but not full-on “tricky” technical). Then a full-day in person interview that consists of a presentation of your choosing, a few one-on-ones and a panel interview. One of the one-on-ones will be completely non-technical and focused determining if your character and values are aligned with the company's. Tip: read the website and be prepared to articulate with examples how your own values aligned with those of the company, and to talk about experiences that challenged your character.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

How would you go about choosing a sensor to detect glass? How would you test it? Assuming that sensor was used, how would you quantify it's performance?

      Question 2

What non-technical thing would you like to achieve in your lifetime?

I applied online. I interviewed at Shield AI (San Diego, CA)

      Interview

The interview process consisted of a 1 hour virtual interview with the hiring manager, which consisted of a series of technical questions related to the role, along with the typical resume and background review. After the virtual interview, there is an on-site portion that was roughly 5 hours in length and comprised of a panel interview where a presentation on a specified topic is given, a tour of the facility, and a series of one-on-one interviews with various team members on ethics and technical questions.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Describe what work-life balance means to you, and estimate how many hours you would expect to need to fulfill the duties of this role?

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Shield AI

      Interview

Took about 3 weeks, TA screen > Zoom > On-site multi-interviews including a presentation. You can see this company is becoming a "professional interviewing" company, just a revolving door bringing in talented people to pick their brains all day for the cost of a flight and hotel stay. There were some interesting titles like "director" and "leads" from people who didn't seem to come across as domain experts and had no vision of how to qualify or sell their product. I was not impressed. The TX site had a horrible open work area, I practically wanted to walk out once I saw their seating arrangement. I didn't believe in the company, their main product was a $50M acquisition of a product that looks like it could be replicated in a garage. I could not fathom how this company thinks it's worth $1B. Besides the presentation part of the interview, they were all virtual. I used a personal day to visit and honestly, it was a waste of my personal time.

Asking too many details about planning and executing.
