I applied on Dice to a third party company looking for a software developer position. I got a text from a recruiter saying he could get me an interview for an IT position and said it was basically a developer position. I wasn't sure if it was in my field but I decided to entertain it.
About a week later, I got contacted to set up a phone interview. The interview was with a couple people.
First, they took some time to describe the position and said whoever gets hired would slowly take over the role and eventually go on to be an IT Manager. They asked how much experience I had with SQL and Visual Basic (I didn't have any Visual Basic experience). There were also some questions related to customer service and troubleshooting since the job involved that. Also, some questions about my experience with hardware support and installations (I didn't have any). Then, they asked me a couple behavioral questions. I don't think the whole conversation was any longer than 15 minutes.
The conversation felt a bit awkward since it was outside of my field and I wasn't sure how to market my current experience as a developer for an IT role. Also, I had been under the impression that this conversation would be an initial phone screen but it seemed to be treated as a final interview. As a result, I felt unprepared.
At the end, I was told that they would interview a number of candidates and would decide by the end of the month or next month at the very latest. They also said I would hear from them "one way or another." I haven't heard from them in a while and I see that the job posting is no longer on their website so I'll assume they went with someone else.
