I applied through university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Rutgers University (Piscataway, NJ) in May 2013
Interview
As a genetics major, I was required to do at least 1 full year of research. I got a list of professors from department page, emailed selected professors and asked for an interview or couple minutes of their time.

Question 1
What are your interests? What are your future plans? Ph.D.? Master's? Thesis?
Basic interviewing and behavioral questions over the phone, then an in-person interview asking about interests and other topics relating to the position, followed up with an acceptance or denial within the week
Basic interview covering past experience with lab equipment as well as past lab and thesis work. Asked a lot of specific questions about my past research as well as prompted me to talk heavily about my role in the past.
I did not have to interview as I was placed by recommendation of a professor. That said, interview experience totally depends on professor (some will not interview). Some professors will require you to go through an interview while others are looking for students and will take you on the fly.
