      Systems Engineer Interview

      4 Aug 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Long Beach, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Rocket Lab (Long Beach, CA) in Aug 2020

      Interview

I applied online. I started with a phone screen with the recruiter which was really easy. Just discussed the resume and specifics about couple experiences on the resume. Recruiter didn't ask any technical or case-based questions, which I appreciated, because it's always apparent when a recruiter works off a rubric for technical jobs and tries to be knowledgeable on questions they don't understand. Following that I had a video interview scheduled with the hiring manager a few days later. The interview was pretty unstructured and overall not challenging. Felt like a weird mix of fit and technical. Just be ready to decompose experience on your resume in a sound technical manner. I applied a month before this interview and realized during the interview that I applied to a spacecraft position, and to both mine and Rocket Lab's benefit realized it wasn't a good fit. I can't remember now why I applied to a spacecraft position, but I had no interest in working on Photon, but rather Electron. Additionally they seemed to be looking for experience that spanned the full product lifecycle, and my work was on early stage portion of space programs. After the interview was over the hiring manager actually indicated that I'll be handed off to the next step in the process, and wished me best of luck. But a couple days later I got the rejection from the recruiter, so I was surprised, but not exactly disappointed. I'm glad they worked fast. They did seem to have a chip on their shoulder about living in SpaceX's shadow, and don't seem too thrilled about rideshare developments, but both in the interview and marketing online they make it clear that they've got great market share for the things they're doing - and they do. I wish them the best! I'll always support commercial space advancement.

      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Rocket Lab in Feb 2024

      Interview

Technical interview loop, where you meet with multiple engineers, managers, and then finally ending with bar-raiser interview with senior leadership. Lots of 'what if' scenarios and very through knowledge check of the fundamentals of Systems Engineering & Space Vehicle design. Overall very challenging but great to get to work with a team with deep technical knowledge and strong engineering fundamentals.
